Eta: Try stretching out your IT band. Also google runners knee.

pretty sharp pain, especially going up stairs. Knee feels sore when i start each jog but once i really get going it feels normal i guess.

Do you stretch or foam roll? Do some IT band stretching and start rolling your legs out!

If on the outside of your knee, it could be I-T band issues. I've been struggling with that for a while now. Sounds like similar issues that I have. I found stretching and foam roller have helped quite a bit.

yeah, I stretch every time. I have these New Balance tennis shoes that i got back in December that have taken a beating since.

that probably isn't helping anything.

Are you actually running multiple times a day? Or did you mean to say you run every couple days?

If you're running multiple times in a day, the pain is probably because you're running too much. Run less, let your body rest.

If you run "a couple times per day" on the same shoes since ~ January, I think you know where you should start...

Outside of knee cap? IT band. I have dealt with the same and I know it hurts like hell. Stretch out that hip man. Work with a foam roller (PVC pipe if you can bear it) as much as possible.

This is a good stretch

i've never really ran much until this year. I've usually just lifted weights but wanted to start more cardio.

i probably haven't run anywhere close to this much since high school football during hell week?

I don't know.

Tendinitis is your issue. Just stretch, rest and NSAIDs. Should be ok.

I'm dealing with patella tendon issues and some foot pain......fricking sucks. Marathon training starts in a few weeks.

I agree with people stretching, I have also found that jogging irritated my knee, and found that I was taking shorter strides. Military folks know doing formation runs could lead to some sore knees for not doing a whole lot. Perhaps you are taking short strides, and could try out different stride lengths.

i did a race awhile back called the Tunnel Vision race in Mobile but it was only a 5K Run. You had to go through the old tunnel in downtown and the race finished on the Causeway out by this restaurant called Felix Fish Camp.

i couldn't see myself doing a marathon even though i'm pretty wound up most of the time.

So you went from not really running much to 40ish miles a week? That is what caused your problem and the IT band (what it sounds like) is just a symptom. You probably have form issues, the wrong shoes, and most likely some muscle imbalance (if you've been doing a lot of lifting).

Stretching, rolling and cutting back your volume will help your knee. However, you need to build up your volume slowly over a long period of time, get some proper running shoes, and have someone check your form. Good luck

another thing is that the sidewalks i use are so poorly run down. they literally look like shite, especially on a busy street called Dauphin St. Looks like somebody took a sledgehammer to several areas on the course I run. So I'm usually trying to watch my step in certain areas.

i use some of the back streets too and can usually stay on them longer especially in the early morning when there isn't as much traffic.
