Do 1.6 gpf toilets make a that big difference from a 1.28?
I have old cast iron pipes in part of the house and keep getting plugs.
Would love to find an old 2 or 3.5 gpf but I guess those are unicorns now. Should have never thrown the old one away knowing what I know now.

Depends on the design, I’d say.
I’ve found a world of difference in a cheap toilet (2 flushes to clear) vs an expensive well designed one (1 flush).

Get a Kohler. They flush really well even the lower gpf ones

Sounds like your pipes are root bound. Old cast iron pipes do break down over time. Tree roots will get into them.

When’s the last time you sharpened your poop knife?

I did a bunch of research a month ago and generally the thought from plumber's forums is that the design matters more than 1.28 vs 1.6. Toto toilets are liked almost universally although they come with a price tag.
I went cheaper and bought an American Standard Vormax which seems to work fine but I think it was a mistake. It has a proprietary flushing system that has parts not available at the hardware store or maybe even the plumbing supply.
I don't even know if the design will be around in 10 years. Bit of a Rube Goldberg design.

No roots, had it camerad. Pitted as hell with a lot of scale build up. Pretty long run from bac of house too. The house was added onto back in the 80s. Don’t think the plumbing job was great. We converted a work room with an existing bathroom into a bedroom for our daughter. Had it plug 4 times since we added new fixtures. It’s a combination of things causing it but I’m trying to exhaust every option before spending a ton on new plumbing

The one I have is an American standard 1.28. Think it’s a cadet. Will check into a 1.6 toto. Think Lowe’s carries in town

Outhouses are making a comeback.
Eco friendly and no maintenance.

Could be what is going into the toilet that is not suppose to. Girls can clog toilets like you wouldn't believe. They think tampons, dental floss, facial wipes and damn near anything else can go down the drains with no problem.

Yup, that’s one of the fixes right there. Uncomfortable talk but threatening for her to pay the next 200 dollar clog bill may work

Does eco friendly equate to less water? One thing the plumbers I have talked too state is for old cast iron pipes, you need to have more water flow. The more the better. The old toilets provided that but new codes only allow up to 1.6. So I’m told

I have those home Depot store brand ones, Glacier Bay, and they have been fine for me

Sounds like they are complicating something that shouldn’t be complicated. Generating head pressure!

Rule #1: Always buy GERBER toilets.
Don't throw wipes in the toilet
You have cast iron which means your sewer line under the slab or piers is old as frike, it may be time to have the dummies at Rotten Rooter clean it out with a sewer machine.
You main line could have roots in it.

Look into a pressure assisted toilet. Uses water pressure tank to provide a powerful flush like you see in many commercial restrooms. May even be able to retrofit your current toilet.

quote:99% chance this is from hair and rust. No toilet is going to resolve that matter. As said, new toilets flush better. I changed from old big toilet to newer smaller, and they flush so much better. Unfortunately, they attract skid marks more easily.
