I really don’t see what all the shouting’s about in regards to mirrorless.
I don’t think there’s any shouting. This thread is like the HGTV memes where a teacher and a social worker want to buy a home, and their budget is only $1million.
A mirrorless camera for cold weather Astro photography under $1500 is not based in reality. That budget won’t support a quality tripod, mount, and software.

However, there’s an increasing consensus they won’t survive the mirrorless transition.
I've shot mirrorless for the last 7-8 years. Much prefer the electronic viewfinder over optical, it shows you exactly how your image will turn out.

, and Canon is the biggest seller in this segment too
I have a Canon full frame now, will be my last Canon. They can't pull the same dynamic range as the Sony sensors, which most other companies including Sony and Nikon use. The canon sensors in general aren't as good as others, though some like canon's reproduction of colors.
DXOMark sensor ratings.
My old Fuji XT1 (2013 or so) outperforms my current full frame Canon in almost every category. Fuji colors are top notch, they don't use the Bayer pattern most Sony sensors use for color.

I upgraded my Nikon gear to mirrorless and have a 750 I would move for a decent price if you are interested.

I haven’t used either of Fuji’s new bodies but I thought I wanted an XS10 or S10 or whatever that one is called because I’d be more likely to take one with me than I would any of the cameras I currently own. The eye af didn’t work as well as my main camera so I passed but if they improve that enough I may take another look. The body/lens combo is just so much smaller than my smallest body/lens combo and I’d actually take with me to most places.

Which Canon do you have? They’re not known for their super high dynamic range but I’ve never actually found it to be a problem in practice. The pictures you normally post are beautiful.

This has been true for 5+ years. But their lens selection and prices as well as their service and repair business more than cancel out the advantage.

Those were with a Pentax K3 and several Fuji cameras. I haven't posted anything with the Canon yet, I have been kind of disappointed.
Ive used the RP and the R. R shares the same sensor as the 5D IV, the RP has the same sensor as the 6D II.
My older Sony A7 III was much better but Sony lenses are meh.

I would consider finding a gently used camera and spend a little extra on a good lens.

quote:I went with Canon because I specifically wanted the RF 70-200. There’sa new 70-200 g master from Sony that I may try and eventually replace my Canon with. I do don’t landscape so maybe the difference in dynamic range doesn’t make enough of a difference to me. I shoot a lot of my kids playing baseball and just playing in general and I’ve been more than happy with my Canon. Well both, I have a Canon DSLR as well which also isn’t known for its incredible dynamic range.

I ended up choosing a Nikon Z5 for the camera body (this was a gift and the reason for the $1500 budget)
I purchased two lenses to start:
Nikkor Z 20mm f/1.8 S
Nikkor Z 28-75mm f/2.8
I can’t wait for clear night skies to attempt my first Astro shot.
Second question for the group. I’m looking for a good tripod for shooting while hiking/backpacking; there is an aluminum option by Peak Design that looks good. Any opinions or other suggestions for a good tripod?

Was thinking Nikon d7500, but am hearing they will be discontinued within 2 years.
A camera won't stop working because it is discontinued. The lenses will still fit, it will still take photos. I have a Canon 5D, purchased in 2007, that still works fine and all the new lenses still fit it. You may have other reasons for getting a different camera, but don't let some future discontinuance stop you from buying one. Almost every camera you purchase should outlast its production run.
