Only while in drive, upon pressing and releasing the brakes there is a single knock. Just recently replaced the pads. I've never had this happen before. Any ideas?

That would be the homeless person you ran over reminding that he's still stuck in the undercarriage.

Year model? Make? Model? Miles? Engine size? Automatic or manual transmission?

Just small stuff like that, nothing special.

There's a recall on caliper grease.

How could that even happen?

I have a chevy pickup and have heard this before...never have figured out what causes it, but it hasn't gotten worse over ten years.

I'm trashy and I had a mustang that had a broken motor mount that did this once. Didn't make noise on startup or anything else, just when braking. Was pretty weird. I bought some common parts that could cause it and it was a damn motor mount.

Sounds like a caliper issue.

If it's worse while turning it's your CV joint

Ball joints

My first thought as well.

A noticeable clunk when the car lurches under braking or rears-back on strong acceleration might be the ball joint bushings.

broken motor mount

Seriously, this is probably the problem. Especially, if the car is FWD. It's easy to check, but make sure you have a friend you really trust and quick relaxes, just in case something happens.

Have you looked at the caliper? I've seen a caliper bolt fall out before so that when the brakes were engaged the caliper would swing up and down slightly (pivoting on the remaining bolt) and make a clunking noise every time the brakes were pressed.

If your brakes were recently changed maybe the bolt was left loose and backed out.

On a Tacoma, I think the typical knock is the carrier bearing for the rear driveshaft. Not exactly up front
