Truck drove fine yesterday with no noticeable issues. Just went to drive it and a horrible metal on metal grinding and squealing sound accompanied by violent vibration in the area of the drivers side front end. This occurs in reverse or drive. No idea what it is. Instantaneous break issue?

Sounds like a break issue. Might want to take the tire off and look.

A brake pad that is metal on metal or bare. Anything that looks like it may be out of place really.

How many miles on the truck?

Could be the brake pads are worn down and grinding on the rotor

Or it could be the plastic "housing" that encases your tire has come loose and is rubbing against the tire. My wife had this issue on her SUV once.

Make sure your emergency brake isn't on or activated

Just replaced hub assembly in my son's Denali. Exactly the same symptom.

You might have a brake caliper thats stuck open. If so, you take a big C clamp and force the to open

ETA. If you end up forcing the caliper open with a C clamp it's gonna lock back down again when you start driving it and hit the brakes again.

Took the tire off. Should I be able to turn the assembly by hand. Because I can't.

I just need a way to get it to the shop. Is there a way to segregate that line so fluid doesn't get to those breaks

Will the other side turn freely while the wheel is off the ground. If it will then you either have a brake pad locked open or you could have a siezed bearing in the hub assembly. Or as someone else stated could be a rock stuck between the rim and brake pad.

No rocks. Don't know about other side. All noise and vibration was from drivers side.

in sure there are ways to do it but I would advise not doing it. Call a wrecker to take it to a shop. Will be cheaper than continued use if something is siezed and a whole lot cheaper than an accident caused by malfunctioning brakes. Just my .2
