Thanks for all the replies in here. I'll keep all of these in mind(the serious ones at least...I have enough stress over attention seeking suicidal comments my father has made...I don't need OT suicide jokes).
I already talked to my dad about the home CO2 monitor suggestion and him trying to just use air recirculate option in his car to see what happens.
Talked again with my mom...she said she actually only smelled it one time.

Whats the deal here? I got a letter in the mail about this saying I could bring mine in to be serviced but they downplayed any real impacts pretty hard.

A friend and I sat in his 67 GTO in the parking lot of a softball complex during a driving rainstorm prior to a softball tournament. It was chilly so he had the heat on and I squeezed out a killer fart. It was so bad he put down his window and didn’t care how much rain got in his car. He said the air was so rank and the odor so thick, he swore he saw a turd floating by in the air.
So, yes, we smelled it.

As others have mentioned I've heard of instances where the catalytic converter can cause this.

Im not an expert in the detectors. But you're trying to detect CO not CO2. For 30 bucks you can buy a sensor that will read the level instead of just an alarm going off.
Just search carbon monoxide meter. Seem to carry then at a lot of places.

Nurse, as others have posted, there could very well be a tiny exhaust leak that they are smelling from time to time. It will be time consuming, but one way to find it would be to squirt soapy water on the exhaust system to see if any bubbles pop up. Trouble is, you have to do it when everything is cold, so that the solution doesn't flash to steam due to the heat. It certainly won't be worth the trouble, but that is one way to be sure.
Same situation also could be due to the tailpipe not extending far enough out from under the vehicle or even the wind blowing exhaust back under the vehicle when the situation is just right. Also, as someone else posted, be sure there is not a very small oil leak dripping on the exhaust or something like that.
The carbon monoxide detector idea is a good one. No special detector is needed...just take a home detector and put it in the car for a while. Once done, you can mount the detector in their house to keep them safe there. Another idea is that your local natural gas company and probably your local fire department have very sensitive CO detection equipment. They will be reluctant to test a car, but it may be worth a shot.
ETA: hopefully, they understand that it is normal to smell some exhaust when backing the vehicle out of a driveway or something like that...
