OT mechanics----smell of exhaust in car

So my dad is smelling exhaust inside of his minivan...but not every single time he drives it. He already dropped it off at the Nissan dealership and they kept it all day looking at it....and could find nothing wrong.
It's a 2007 Nissan Quest.
I've mentioned my dad's issues with severe anxiety. He will find a worry and obsess over it(like losing sleep, not eating,obsessing over it like it was the end of the world coming). Because the dealership can't find anything wrong...I'm leaning that he is just obsessively worrying over this and that nothing is wrong. But before I completely just discount this as just my crazy dad being crazy.....could something be wrong to cause this that a dealership wouldn't have found??

Is he sure this isn’t related to the A/C air intake selection?
Fresh air selection typically will pick up an exhaust smell vs interior circulation which doesn’t really pick up air from the outside when running the A/C.

You should probably park it in the garage with it running to make sure it's really your car you're smelling.

That link cracked me up. One poster claimed to smell the carbon monoxide, which is an odorless gas. Another poster was worried about being poisoned by 14 ppm CO, which is well below the permissible exposure limit.

Put a CO2 detecter from the house in there and leave it run for an hour or so with Windows up and see what happens. Everyone should be satisfied, including schizophrenic dad.

That's a great idea. Was just looking at portable CO2 detectors for your car and they are pricey.

Had a 2009 Nissan Altima last year that had this same issue. It turned out to be the catalytic converter. I opted for a new car instead of replacing the converter.

He got this Nov 2016 after I relocated them from BR after the flood(his truck flooded). Only had 68K miles on it and was within our 10k budget. I kept trying to convince him to get a smaller used car for the same price(but one that was newer)but he wanted something bigger.
He is so freaked out about this he now wants to trade this in for another car now.

My mom said she smelled it..but not every time.
Last time I was at their house I couldn't see/smell for myself cause that was the day he had it at the dealership.

If his concern are cars that have minor flaws he really needs to stay away from used cars.
He had an subject matter expert give him their professional opinion and he is choosing not to believe them. The fight is over.
Personally, I think it is a small exhaust leak and he drives around with the fresh air open all the time. Probably gets worse at red lights or stop and go traffic.
Someone like him will best be served bringing to an exhaust specialist that will screw his eyes out.

Check for fuel leak under the hood, that could smell like exhaust

there could be a slight leak of the gasket that are on the valve covers, my 04 maxima had a slight leak and occasionally i would smell a burnt engine oil smell inside the vehicle because the oil would go onto the exhaust manifold

I hate to add to the side of the conversation that favors the paranoid but there are situations where the exhaust manifolds can crack and leak under republican ad stress. Which doesn’t show up when you sit the car in a repair bay and idle it. Before you label the guy as crazy, consider that. A road test is called for.

I appreciate the opinion. He is driving me crazy with this though.
