Check engine light came on my 2021 Silverado came on today, so I took it to Autozone for a diagnostic test. Code 0420 came up and they said I need a new catalytic converter. 93k miles. Obviously I’ll be taking it to a shop for another opinion. Anybody had this trouble before and had a different outcome other than replacing the catalytic converter? And for those who did replace it, how much did it run you? Great surprise right before the holidays.

Anyone got mechanic recommendations in Dallas?

I replace mine for my 2007 accord every couple years with a cheap one from Amazon. It just bolts on.

yes not good hopefully that part is cheap, there are some other factors that may contribute but I doubt those are the culprit.

Probably just a sensor

It could be the O2 sensor or the converter. More than likely it’s the sensor. Don’t trust what someone at autozone says. They’ll spend 30 minutes looking for a radiator cap for an air cooled VW if you ask them to. Get it checked by a real mechanic who doesn’t use an el cheapo obd reader.

Generally that error means an O2 sensor needs to be replaced. There should be one before and one after the converter. Replace them both and then clear the code.

It takes a lot to make a catalytic converter fail. Either tons of bad gas or blow by in the engine can cause it or it has broken inside due to a collision of some sort.

I've only had to change exactly one converter in 30 years and that was because it was smacked hard off road and broke the element inside. Other than that, every time I've seen that error, replacing the sensors fixes it.

IIRC, emissions related items may have a longer warranty than other components.

Not sure if sensors are covered....

Might be worth checking into...

The P0420 code is a generic trouble code that indicates a problem with your car's catalytic converter or oxygen sensors

Google GM P0420 DTC and it does show a catalytic converter or sensor issue.

Until the dealer charges you $200 for the diagnostic.

I doubt your 2021 needs a new converter. Probably need to change the O2 sensor upstream of the converter. Or try running a can of fuel system emissions cleaner in it to see if that helps first

Try running a bottle of Cat Clean through it first.

catalytic converters don't go bad. they can get clogged but that is impossible at 93k miles. if it gets clogged the engine won't keep running. it's just a sensor. a bad sensor will only result in worse gas efficiency. no big deal. eff the tyrants at the epa.

Yep, could be o2 sensor. Solved the problem when I replaced mine. Also, it’s a 5 minute job and the mechanic was gonna charge like $350. The part is around $70 depending on which type you need.

Unless something has changed, it's at least 80,000 miles. Your paperwork will tell you exactly what it is. As far as diagnostics, you need a really good scanner and a good technician. It will be cheaper than throwing parts at it.

Yes on an 07 avalanche. I had a new cat installed, went to drive off, and the light came back on. Called the mechanic back and he said I needed another catalytic converter. That was the place off Siegen in front of Winn Dixie and my first encounter with the parts changers mechanics.

I did a bunch of troubleshooting and determined it was a faulty evap valve. I just sold the truck bc I didn’t feel like messing with it
