Since their were no photos to aspire to, artists sought to capture the truth of their subject in a manner other than photo realism.

Because today’s artists can use MS Paint to help their artwork look more like the photograph

Something that ‘looks like a photograph’ is merely the application of a linear perspective, which had to be invented in the 14th century. The little thing called the Renaissance followed

Actually the rise of photography is more commonly seen as the impetus for Impressionism - what was the point of perfecting linear perspective after photography?
