OT handymen: A/C question

I've started noticing when my A/C kicks on, a loud popping noise happens right as it starts. I've heard A/C's make kind of a small cracking noise before when kicking on but this one seems bigger.
Any idea what this could be? Any suggestions on how to fix it?

Typically it's the compressor having a hard time getting spooled up. Common on older units. Sometimes it's a bad start capacitor or if the compressor is old it needs a kick start capacitor to help get it going.
Any competent AC repairman should be able to handle this with parts on the truck.
If you are handy you can DIY but don't F around in the outside unit unless you know how to work on electrical stuff.

The noise is coming from the vent area in my hallway. The filter is only about a month old.

Sounds like the filter is being sucked up against the frame when the unit starts.
Put a sock in there to take up space or bend the tabs on the filter frame to accommodate the thin filter.

If the filter is a month old, go ahead and change it. If it has enough restriction to cause it to make enough noise for you to notice it, it is time to change the filter.

I'll second this.
The only other thing I'd suggest is to make sure that the filter is in properly and the overs that cover the filter is securely in place. If the problem started very shortly after you changed the filter, this may in fact be the issue.

mine does this as well...if that is the problem, a piece of duct tape will fix it.

Older houses might have a sheet metal return duct. This sound could be a popping sound from this duct as the unit first comes on.
