Get a consistent fundamentally sound swing. Read Five Lesson by Hogan. Practice.

Then get fitted.

Fitting a crappy swing will only encourage crappy golf.

Not sure if everyone is goofing or what but I actually carry the tournament blades with a set of four classic wedges. I also have the SIT driver and love them all. Very good irons.

Depending on your height and swing, fitting isn't all that necessary and as long as you get the proper shaft flex, everything can be adjusted after the fact.

I'd buy something on eBay or even callawaypreowned that's an upgrade to what you have now.

Taylormade or Callaway game improvement irons are ideal

You've got some good advice.

Best advice I can give, is before you buy anything, handle the irons.

By that I mean, practice swing, just waggling it back and forth, hit some balls in the net. Get a feel for it.

Back in the day, King Cobra irons were the club I'd play. Everyone swore by Ping irons or forged Wilson Staff, but the Cobras were just what felt right. Played them for over 20 years and finally just wore them out. Won money off a lot of people with those clubs.

I could hit anything else, but just couldn't shape shots the same way. Golf's a mental game, if you get clubs that "feel right" you have more confidence in swinging them.

Absolutely a player improvement stick right there. If I recall, Golf Digest gave them high marks.

He can still get fitted size wise right? But to get in a bay to hit balls and see strike point on tape may be pointless with a total dogshit swing.

OP.... Bottom line. dont spend too much. Upgrades make yo feel better, which makes you play better and want to practice more.

So I've been playing for roughly a year now and am getting a little better. Took some lessons and now I'm not hitting in the 100's anymore, but long story short I have a set of old clubs passed on from my dad. I just think it's time to go get a set of my own.

So any suggestions on which ones for a weekend golfer like me? Also they can be used, I'm considering looking at the stuff at Edwin watts as well. TIA, any advice is appreciated

Go down to a local shop that can fit you, most won't even bother charging you for a basic iron fitting since most have sponsored iron carts. Better yet, hit a demo day at a local course or driving range. your an get a pretty solid fitting at a demo day because they really want to sell irons. Then go find what you are looking for at Edwin Watts or Golfsmith.

The problem with trying to get the loft and lie adjusted after you buy them, lots of cavity back "game improvement" irons are cast heads and don't take to bending well. If you get a forged steel head iron then they can tweak the shite out of them without much worry.

I would recommend any set of Ping irons with he exception of maybe the ISI irons. Ping irons are forgiving enough to play while shooting 100 and they are consistent and good enough to play when you are shooting 75. If you decide to quit the game altogether then Ping have tremendous resale value.

get a couple of lessons. the pro can help you pick the clubs based on your body and swing.

and go hit a basket of balls during the week or you will just suffer.

you have to play regularly to have touch.
lessons. then hit more balls.

blessings.

Op, I use to work for a major golf company fitting folks. While getting a true fitting in will definitely help you, it might be a little premature right now if you're just getting started. Driver's/shaft is another story. But irons are pretty self explanatory. I recently switched over to Ping because the clubs last FOREVER and retain value. They also manage to have a fitting system online that is super simple to use and will get you set up (lie angle, shaft, grip size - essentially the basics for a guy to get his score into the mid 80's). Once they tell you what lie and flex, try to find on eBay.

They're drivers are also pretty squared away, and each driver does something a little different. So new is not necessarily the best. My favorite ping driver to date is one that was made in 2007 and is longest by far because the spin rate vs launch angle was perfect for my swing and transition. (Ping Rapture V1 for those of you familiar)

TLDR - Ping is a great company to get fitted from your couch. At least check em out. LINK
