Can you take antibiotics that are a year old (doxycycline)?

Sure. You just have to double or triple the dose.

I'm not a doctor.

Don't ask doctors about drugs. Ask a pharmacist.

The tetracyclines in doxycycline can become toxic over time. However if they’re only one year old you should be fine.

Yea, often times expired pills get sent to Nicaragua and other poorer countries. It will still work.

Bad news is you probably don’t have the full regimen necessary. Taking one or even a couple won’t kill everything

Yes, may not have the same efficacy, but you will be okay.

Why do you have extra antibiotics laying around?

Rule #1....always finish the course of antibiotics unless told otherwise by your MD (ex: they switched you to a different one, etc).

Eta: lemme guess....chlamydia came back?

I am a doctor.

Antibiotics won’t cure AIDS.

Sorry.

Maybe his family has a situation like mine:

86 year old Dad had lingering "sinus cold" from about a week before Thanksgiving. Third week of January he finally went to a Doc in a Box who gave him script for 10 day regimen of antibiotics. Because of the A-Fib, COPD, CHF, etc. and no CXR, the 1st dose triggered a cascade event and killed him. (official CoD: pneumonia and CAD)

So, 9.5 day regimen of tetracycline derivative leftover.

There is a growing belief among the experts that study this type of thing that this is a idea that needs to change.

LINK

"The researchers say that the directive to always finish antibiotics is incorrect and not evidence-based, and that new clinical trials should determine the best lengths of treatment for specific conditions and situations. Not only is the message potentially harmful, they write, but it “goes against one of the most fundamental and widespread medication beliefs people have, which is that we should take as little medication as necessary.”

I would assume that most of the doxy eggs would have hatched and flew off if it's been a whole year.

Yes, but you're going to need 14 capsules in order to treat your chlamydia.

ETA: Nurse beat me to the chlamydia joke
