TL;DR Cliff Notes - Dentist does a shoddy filling job, hits a nerve, and then wants me to pay for a root canal and a crown. I don’t want the same dentist who screwed up to make more $$ off of me. WWTOTD

So I went to the dentist and they spotted some small decay. So, I got a filling. But now it’s a week later and the tooth is still very sore & sensitive to chewing / hot / cold.

Based on a similar incident with this same dentist office 10 years ago, they’ll tell me that during/after the filling operation, the nerve was damaged, and that I need a root canal & crown. Last time, I straight up asked the dentist why I am paying for a root canal when the cavity was small and a filling was questionable. She said that with teeth sometimes unexpected things happen and that’s just how it goes.

I’m pretty much resigned to just walking out if they tell me I need a root canal. They should not reap the financial benefits from shoddy dental work.

Am I spot on with my position, or am taking too hard a line on an honest mistake (or no mistake at all)

Teeth can respond differently and can be somewhat unpredictable when you drill on them.

Even if the decay doesn't get to the nerve, the tooth could still not like the trauma that removing the decay caused. The nerve then gets inflamed and you get toothache.

You can take 800mg of ibuprofen 3 times a day for a week. I've had lots of patients with symptoms like yours that did this and it helped out and calmed the tooth down.

If the tooth doesn't respond well and continues to be symptomatic, then yes, you would need a root canal.

I've seen very good fillings done by excellent dentist where the tooth became symptomatic and needed a root canal even on shallow fillings.

Go see an endodontist to get it tested.

This is true. Every time a tooth is chipped, hit, drilled, etc. it can cause a chain rxn resulting in needing a root canal. Whether or not you need a new dentist is up to you, but if you no longer trust this one it may be best to part ways

My bigger issue is if I am rewarding hack work. That’s what I’m trying to figure out.

I just recently heard of this for the first time, had a friend get veneers on front teeth by a very competent dentist, but he was in constant pain afterword, and eventually required root canals. The endodontist told him the same thing, the prepping for the veneers had disturbed the nerves.

Two things -

(1) Oh, I’ll do it big boy...but my main thread question is: Am I rewarding bad behavior?
(2) I hate taking so much time off of work to deal with the same damn problem.

Bonus
(3) You’re a ding dong

Serious question: Is this just some dental mumbo jumbo to avoid accountability for shoddy work?

Probably not. You probably just got unlucky.

That being said, If i needed a root canal, especially on a molar or premolar, I would have it done by an endodontist.

I don't think so. When you cut on a tooth, you create a lot of heat. That is why the drill shoots out a lot of water, to try to cool the tooth off. However, sometimes the tooth just doesn't handle it well. I know that sounds like a cop out, but it happens sometimes.

I would imagine that teeth are like old plaster walls, every little thing you do to them could make a crack or break in the surrounding areas. I would let her do it or go to another, either way I wouldn't put it off, it's only going to be worse by putting it off.

My take after reading this thread is it's best to avoid dental work and try to hold off decay with a healthy diet, regular flossing, a soniccare toothbrush, and using Listerine
