Glad everyone survived but you should never pick up another firearm again for the rest of your life. Always check the chamber and see if there is a round lodged in the barrel. Period.

People who handle a lot of firearms you’ll see some of them lock the slide back look and then poke their pinky finger into the ejection port to feel for a round in the chamber.
I’d guess when op pulled the trigger the first time, the live round wasn’t firmly seated in the chamber. The second time, it was.

Might want to try a "Nursing assistant" that wants to get a phlebotomist license or already has one. Anyone intentionally wanting to work in a lab has something wrong with them.
