I wouldn't spend 4000+ on anything 8 yrs old.
Pays for itself in 6-7 months vs a $700 note.
My truck is 7 years old and I'd easily drop 4k on it if I needed to and didn't think it was going to be a chronic problem.

You can always contact Honda
.
I did with 2916 Nissan when my cvt failed last year at about 120,000 miles. Told them I was a long time Nissan owner and listed all the vehicles I purchased from them. They ate over half the cost of the repalcement transmission and labor. It's worth a shot.

You can also dump some berrrymans in that cylinder and let it sit overnight. Free the piston rings!!
I'm confused on why you think they need to be freed? What makes you think they are frozen in place? If so, how would they move to line up?
I'm NOT an expert, but believing that these rings magically lined up and at that instant, froze into place, is not making sense.

Did you have the timing belt change at 105,000 miles or so? If not, you’re overdue anyway.

If this is the estimated repair cost from a dealership, find an independent mechanic shop.
I have a 2017 Silverado with a pretty commonly known issue (condenser failure). Chevy wanted a ridiculous amount of money to fix it. A local (reputable) mechanic shop did the work in two hours for $800.
This was really the first regular mechanical issue I have had to deal with, but the process was pretty straight forward. They have, what I interpret to be, a standard system that calculates parts/labor for the job and that was that. I came back and got my truck before lunch. I saved a LOT of money.

So when the engine is assembled at the plant, the rings are staggered. So, over the years, the rings have kind of spontaneously migrated into alignment causing this problem. Shouldn't they eventually migrate back out of alignment?
Piston rings rotate all the time, more or less constantly. I have read the rotation speed is 1-2 revolutions per minute so you will get the rings lining up on occasion. This is normal. Problems occur when the rings line up and lock in that position. Carbon packing and out of round cylinders are two examples of why this can occur. The only likely way to diagnose this in an assembled engine is to borescope the cylinder and see a wear pattern on the cylinder bore that is indicative of stuck rings. Again going back to what I said before about the transverse mounted engine and given this is the #3 cylinder it is against the firewall and would likely require an hour of "book time" just to get the spark plug out for inspection. I have no way of knowing what the dealership did or did not do.
It is likely the diagnosis is based on the symptoms fitting a particular pattern issue.
This could be a lot of things but the most likely issue for these symptoms in general is a bad coil over plug. In fact, again in general not this specific engine which I do not know, it is the issue 90% of the time. A bit of advice about coil over plug coils on a transverse mounted engine if you have to replace one on the firewall bank replace them all and ALWAYS use OE parts. Chinese coils are prone to failure and the back bank is a more harsh environment. Given most could on the front bank are quick and easy to access I will replace a single coil there.

Yes.
I have it on my 09 Odyssey.
The VCM system screws up the cylinders that are shut down.
The muzzler disables the VCM.
You'll lose 1mpg.
Pour a shiteload of seafoam or berryman in the crankcase and intake to try to uncake those rings.
Change to fresh oil.
The Odyssey forums have all of the info.
Super simple to install the Muzzler.

***Update***
First and foremost, thanks for the all the help and advice OT
Ok, so we filed a claim with American Honda Motor Company, sighting their flawed VCM system and not any neglect on my part. They offered to cover $2000 of the $5000 cost estimate. That wasn’t enough as we were looking for over a 50% cost reduction.
So, we went with the minimum; change the spark plugs , clear the error codes, and move on.
When we got home, we installed the S-VCM controller chip. LINK /
Went for a drive and never saw the “ECO” light come on.
I went and filled up with 93 octane and used a bottle of STP Complete Fuel System Cleaner ( LINK / ) mainly because that’s all they had .
I still want to add the oil treatment additives as well . And any other additives we need to make it 2 more years!
We’ll see how she goes. Again, thank you all for the help!

Could use a little thicker viscosity oil.

Late to this thread.
Ah, the old VCM curse of the Honda V6.
ANYBODY with one of these VCM engines should install a VCM muzzler as soon as possible. It is only a matter of time before this system cause problems. Expensive problems.
For whatever tiny fuel savings there are it is not worth the decreased reliability
ETA: 2008 Honday Odyssey, muzzled since 2008, 138k and still runs great.

Because it was the diagnosis from the dealership and direct injection engines are prone to carbon buildup and freezing the rings, causing oil consumption.
Plus, a couple cans of Berrymans and Valvoline Restore and Protect costs less than 1 hour of mechanics labor...just the labor. So why not. You arent going to hurt it by cleaning all that crap out.
I'd change the oil filter after 500 miles. That Valvoline is no joke, apparently.
To the OP, hope your latest works out for you. GL.

I put the vcm bypass on my wife’s Honda nearly 60k miles and 4 years ago and it’s run flawlessly. Well, except for the tranny fluid deal but that’s an easy fix too. FYI in case you get the stutter. Drain and refill transmission fluid 3x’s does the trick. Make sure to use the Honda fluid.
