Do you sometimes regret not exploring more in your younger years? I have an extremly stable job right now but just got an offer from a start up (I am in the bay area so its really a start up).

Pros: Exciting work, more pay

Cons: Can go bankrupt tomorrow, long work hours

Wondering if this is really the path to success for a millennial

I honestly don't have the stones to venture out and work for a startup or a comparable operation. I probably wouldn't leave my current job unless it was for something better paying and just as steady. The same reason I don't gamble. I'd rather be sure of what I've got then risk it.

Yeah this is what scares me. If the company would be here 2 years from now, Id jump, but there is none of that guarantee. Only way this stays afloat is if there is constant innovation.

No regrets here. Started with my current employer 19 years ago as an intern while still in school at LSU and still here. Have had offers to jump around but the family comes first atmosphere here trumps the opportunities IMO.

Thats good stuff. I think if I knew I could stay at this place for 10+ years, it would be great, but I havent heard of many success stories of people moving out of this company to others.

If you don't take risk you will always work for someone who does

It’s probably a personality thing, but I wouldn’t be interested unless it was ALOT more comp.

I like what I do, I like my coworkers and I like the company (which has been around for almost 150 years). The benefits are good and the retirement plan is great. I’ve been here almost 7 years.

I get that anyone can get canned at any time, but insofar as stability is a thing, I don’t think it gets any better than what I have.

Yeah thats what my goal is. They will offer some company stock and a 20k bump from current pay (not as much as you think, I work in SF) but i have a pension and my company has been here for a while as well. Only reason I am exploring is because my new manager is pretty crappy and I dont think I can learn much from this environment.

I kind of have a feeling that the days of staying at once place till retirement is dead.

If you have a desirable and marketable skill. You can always find employment.

Just depends on your family situation and tolerance for risk.

Risk/reward.

If I had the company man mentality I wouldn’t have started either of my companies and I never would have had the opportunity to work side by side with my son and build a business. It’s a priceless experience for me.

Did 30, got sick. After two years, I was fired. But, had very good disability insurance with them.

Knew I would never be lay off. Good pay and benies and best of all, less then 5 miles from my back door to drive. Besides that, my income was about 35-50% higher then most people made around these parts at the time. Also, wanted to stay close to family.

Yes , it is. Knew it was coming due to the fact that I worked in a power plant. Had a CRT-D implanted. A big no no to work around high voltage with that.

Bad thing, I was rolling in the bucks. Had plan to retire at 55. Was 52 when this happen to me.

After 30 years of loyal service, you'd figure the dumb fricks would have reassigned you to another job.

Feb made 10 years with my current employer and its def had its ups and downs. Ive def looked around but with a wife and 3 young kids, its extremely hard to break away from the pay and benefits stability I currently have. My wife is very supportive and would be ok with me leaving in order to be happier but Im not just going to leave for anything that pays a little more. With the benefit package our company offers, its VERY hard to make that up when I hear what other companies offer benefit-wise.

My main regret is not realizing what ai wanted to do earlier in life. I had an idea but never really pursued it and now I realize I basically wasted alot of years not going after it like I am now.

In a "employment at-will" state, absolutely legal

That said, a good HR department will cover their bases.

Of course it makes a difference if your single or married with children. Then there's just so much more to consider.
