Made the decision on Monday after kids returned to school citing recent uptick of cases. Seems strange that the decision was made after kids returned to school and not last week sometime.

quote:

“Citywide data over the past few days has shown a dramatic uptick in positivity rates, and so, based upon the advice of our health advisors, we felt we had to make the very unfortunate but necessary decision to return to distance learning to keep our students, staff, teachers and community safe. We recognize this will be extremely difficult for our families and hope that everyone takes the necessary precautions to reverse the spread of this terrible virus," schools

quote:

And Monday's announcement ran counter to a news release the Orleans school district had put out just last week, when it said it was looking forward to beginning the new semester Monday with students learning inside classrooms.

quote:

But in a Jan. 1 letter, the United Teachers of New Orleans questioned why schools were being kept open in light of the city's case rate rising above the 50-per-day threshold and urged Lewis and the School Board to rethink in-school learning. Among other things, the union said it wanted the district to allow schools the option of going virtual-only and to allow staff members to work from home if they choose.

I am guessing the teachers had the ultimate bitch fest Monday and union representatives talked the superintendent into knuckling under. Trust the science

The big uptick was last couple weeks is my understanding so his comments on 12/30 should’ve have taken the uptick into consideration. Seems off that the decision was made the day they came back instead of over the break.

Also it appears surrounding area public schools are continuing on with in person (at least my google searches didn’t show any other school closures).

Just seems to me virtual learning for PK-2nd would be a waste of time. The kids won’t really get much out of it and the parents of some might get a slight break if the kid will just sit in front of a computer for an extended period of time. Seems to me your time would just be as well spent actually homeschooling the kids (one on one parent/child).

Why bother having school at all? Virtual learning doesn't work for most kids under 15.

Congrats to Orleans Parish teachers. You get more vacation time to complain about how hard your job is on social media.

A few of the catholic schools around here had to send kids home because they had symptoms.
Big New Year’s Eve parties caused some spread

They didn’t shut the schools though. Just sent kids home and let the rest stay

That should be the policy going forward. Not necessarily the 10-14 quarantine but sending kids home that are sick until such time as they are not sick anymore.

What a pathetic district that does not care about students.

Why do you people even bother living in LA, let alone anything near NO or BR.

Leave people!!!

I don’t think they had school yesterday. It was an in service day for the teachers.

Of all the shitty side effects of Covid, history will show this was the worst one. Its not like public school kids were getting much of an education in that city but at least they had a routine and social interaction and structure.

How many of these at risk souls have known security since March of 20? We basically have a legit lost generation on our hands. Imagine missing 8th grade or 9th grade or 10th grade. Forget it. You will never catch up. Hell, they would never have caught up had they been there.

Truly an atrocity that will not be remembered kindly by history.

Either way, parents were under the impression that school would be resuming as normal this week only to be told at the last minute that it was not.

Oh I agree. It’s bullshite, but they weren’t returning to 5 days a week. They were still going to be using a hybrid schedule, like they have been. Now they aren’t even doing hybrid, strictly virtual until Jan 21st
