I think the reasoning for these huge corporations is generally, great business environment + attractive location for its employees. I don’t think the big corporations really care about the reputation or ‘vibe’ of the city in and of itself.

What’s the point of leaving a blue state only to be a part of a blue state?

You think the Austin Chamber of Commerce can pull the wool of the eyes of multinational, multi billion dollar companies?

I’m not an Austin Kool-Aid drinker either, but there has to be something redeeming about the town based on everything going on.

Educated work force. Reasonable cost of living. Business friendly state legislature. Beautiful scenery. I mean everyone knows why. This board is afraid of liberals even though their government leaders are all huge liberals. Lots of conservatives areas around Austin, obviously, there’s a million people there

I agree about the “vibe”...the whole “Keep Austin Weird” thing died out years ago.

That said, you can't claim this:

...and say they don’t care about the city.

After Covid, I think a lot of firms are looking to relocate to low cost of living areas with a good business environment.

I speculated that if Louisiana and Mississippi can at least tread water and avoid raising taxes, it would attract some of that as other states like California, Illinois, New Jersey, and New York decline.

Now it looks like Texas, Tennessee, and Florida are going to basically get all of it.

Oracle, HPE, CBRE, and Charles Schwab all moved to Texas this year (Dallas, Houston, and Austin in particular). There are rumblings about Tesla and SpaceX as well.

It’s an impressive showing.

Texas gets things done.

Not just rumble. Elon is now an Austin resident...

I said a few weeks ago in another thread that I think Apple makes Austin it’s HQ and uses the new $1B campus it’s home.

It would make even more sense now.

CA politicians need to wake the frick up. It’s about more than social causes, and even the most bleeding heart realizes they have to make investors happy above all else. CA constantly gets in the way of that by patting themselves on the shoulder.

I've lived in Austin since the late 90s. It was awesome when I moved here (cold beer, and you could have open beer in the car) and was pretty good through the 2000s.

The last 3-5 years downtown has gone to crap quickly. I've had a few knives drawn on me, had to intervene between homeless folks yelling insults/catcalling at ladies and base downtown is nowhere near as safe or fun as it used to be (even pre-covid).

tldr Adler is horrible.

Why do they all move to Austin?

You're right. These big tech firms should move to Brownsville. They go where the available talent is. Are you in 7th grade or something?

Rainey St was packed every single weekend pre Covid. Even the last couple of weekends for being in Covid restrictions it’s still super busy. Not sure what you’re referring to.

Y’all are all assuming that their workforce in Texas will 1. Be entirely made up of California transplants 2. That all of those transplants will be Democrats and 3. All of them will continued to vote Democrat entirely.

Doesn’t pass the smell test. You have to believe that they added in some qualifiers in to insure that some native Texans were hired as well as part of any tax incentives they offered.

When Volvo came to SC, the county they built in threw a whole bunch of incentives at them with the caveat that 1. When you open up the initial hiring for the first workers in the plant, you have to have an exclusive period where only residents of that county who had lived there for a minimum amount of time could apply and 2. You had to have a minimum number of employees at your opening that were residents of that same county for a minimum amount of time. If those terms weren’t met, those incentives would not be honored.

Like I posted previously , most of their employees already work remotely so they don't have to move to Austin.
