swear up and down that they could train me to do about 50% of their surgical work in 6-8 weeks

Maybe the other 50% could be legislated?

And I don't see where access is a problem. The only ones I see with issues are those that don't wanna pay jack shite. I charge $65 for a cash pay office visit. Sometimes less for simple shite. But if you don't pay at the time of the visit it goes up, because now I have to try and collect. It costs me more than that to fill up my truck with gas.

Cool. So soon, we will see the Optometrists big-timing it just like the MDs with lab coats and all that.
Or, maybe the Ophthalmologists will start to drive Fords now and only make you wait 30 mins instead of an hour?

any predictions of catastrophic results?

Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't see anyone getting fabulously wealthy off yag capsulotomies and PIs. I think this is just them trying to chip their way into the practice of medicine.
Jindal needs to figure out how he's gonna construe this into a good idea during the presidential race. Or maybe he signed it so we can find out what's in it

Thats exactly what it is. They want more procedure codes to legally bill. It isn't that complicated.
Ophthalmologists are worried that the immediate influx of physicians who can now bill codes they had just about exclusive access to will cut their incomes and revenue....which it will.
Unfortunately, alot of physicians (rather than adapting the way they practice medicine) just default to over-utilzation to compensate for income loss. In the end, Johnny Taxpayer loses while the politicians (Heitmeyer) and already rich physicians just get richer.

I don't think this bill had anything to do with Physicians expanding anything

Bad word on the first usage...i should have said influx of providers with access to codes previously set aside for Ophthalmologists.

So it's all about the reaching for, and the protection of, the rice bowl?

Per the Hippocratic Oath, it's about the patient.
Thousands of hours worth of time about the patient.

Yes. Absolutely.
Senator David Heitmeir is a major proponent of the bill and is an Optometrist who own a company (Vision Benefits) that provides Optometry benefits for some of the major health plans in the state.
If his Optometrists and his clinics can bill these additional codes, the fear (by the MDs) is that more people will seek a Optometrist for some of these procedures (depending on their benefit coverage). Some people will not have difference in cost between the two and that will result in a loss on revenue for Ophthalmologists,
This is Louisiana politics at its best. The citizens of the state and patient outcomes is an afterthought.

Actually, I don't think Jindal has to sign anything. By default, doesn't it become law in something like 10 days?

Bill was signed at 2:42 this afternoon. No more need to debate if it's right or wrong. It's the law.
Posted on 6/1/14 at 9:38 pm to LSUfan4444
Which optom do you speak of- are you saying he owns multiple clinics or actual vision insurances?

Cool beans. So, now ..
Optometrists can perform some surgery, write prescriptions, treat diabetes and high blood pressure?
Damn, that's basically a real doctor right there!
