re: Optometry: LA HB 1065/SB 568: What if your Louisiana Eye Surgeon is NOT an MD?

I can't be both - command the language and knowledge of the issues - yet confuse them.
I am being honest with you, in my view - which is simply that - the wheels of our bloated healthcare system have come off.
Paying 15% of GDP on healthcare, medical care or whatever you call it, and rising, is not sustainsble.

I wouldn't be opposed to letting non MD's do this, and that opinion in based on conversations with several doctors who swear up and down that they could train me to do about 50% of their surgical work in 6-8 weeks.
Bill's like this get floated around in the La legislature all the time, and as usual, it is all about money.
I have several clients that are nurse anesthitist (sp), and they tell me that in most other states, an MD of anesthesiology is not required on most surgeries. And that the only reason it's required in La is because Mike Foster's best friend was an MD of anesthesiology. No idea if that's true, just sayin.......
It's probably ok.

Well, my surgery rotation was 10 weeks and that statement is complete bullshite.

So I guess it doesn't take 6-8 weeks, it takes 10?

General Surgery residency is 5 years.

Ok having the consumer decide completely would require legalizing surgery by anyone. Restricting surgery to optometrists and ophthalmologists would be totally against what you wanted. And u might wanna learn to spell ophthalmology

You're reading some communist top ten list

Who on here said most people of any field could be in the top 1% of med school? 99% of all doctors you ever met were not. That's mathematically impossible. Being in the top 1% of med school requires studying around the clock daily for 4 straight years.
And what's the top 1% on the ACT anyway?
Like maybe a 33 or 34 out of 36?
There's no way that a whole class of any professional school field had a 34 on the ACT. Maybe at Harvard law

Great point.
This bill will clearly result in less consumer choice than before.

Um...what? LEt's see...before the only option was an Opthamologist. Now it can be an Optometrist OR an Opthamologist. I don't do math...but aren't two choices more than one??? And restricting to optometrists and opthamologists is not "against what I wanted". I was in favor of a cheaper alternative for people who couldn't afford the ridiculous prices the "monopoly" had allowed opthamologists to charge. Now there is an option for those less fortunate. Say what you want, this is all about greed. Period.

Right.
The statement was so absurd, I thought the sarcasm would be obvious.

Heitmeyer owns Vision Benefits and this will go through.

Gov Jindal would be wise to veto it. He's gonna be on stage with an ophthalmologist when he runs for president.
The bill is about having people who did not do residency doing surgery. That's what it's about

Not just "surgery" as you call it, but adding more billable procedure codes for Optometrists. And when Heitemyer owns a company of Optometrists, connecting the dots isn't hard.
This law will bring tons of over-utilization on both sides. MDs trying to recoup some losses and Optometrists striking while the iron is hot.
Johnny Taxpayer is nothing more than side note in all of this. Typical Louisiana politics with people playing games in Baton Rouge so they can get rich(er).

Any Optometrist or Ophthalmologist on either side of this issue tells you they have patient outcomes as the number one priority in their mind is flat out lying.

Polar, blanket, absolute statements are never correct on a multiple choice test
