The US tried to contain communism all over the world and assumed that the center of gravity, the driving force, of communism was the USSR. Not enough was done within the US and in Western Europe. Academia was the driving force of the socialist movements in Europe and in North America and not enough was done to purge it of communists.

I believe in requiring a license to have kids and mandatory Norplant until the requirements are met.

That was the problem though. We didn't identify the threat properly. The USSR never was the ideological threat. It was academia.
So you're right, it wasn't the Cold War we lost, per se, but the ideological war of socialism vs capitalism.

Unpopular amongst LSU fans: I've said it before but I absolutely HATE the eye of the tiger logo and it's association to one of the cheesiest rock songs ever recorded. The artwork is butt ugly and they have to plaster it all over everything.
