Ping pong table can always be put away if space is needed from time to time. Pool table is there all the time, and probably won't get used as much imo.

If you have it to entertain big parties, ping pong.

If you have it for your own use and to play with a few friends now and then, pool table.

If you have younger cousins or brothers with little respect for nice things, they'll play beer pong on both of them when you are out of town. And the pool table is harder to keep clean.

Buy a pool table. You can always buy the ping pong top. You can't buy a pool top for a ping-pong table.

Do you have groups come over a lot? If not then go ping pong table, if it's just home a lot you can play pool solo. All my friends who have ever had pool tables end up hating them. People get bored of
Playing pool after a few games

Pool tables are also a pain in the arse to move and expensive to refelt if a lot of drinking will
Go with it

If it's in a game room, choose Ping Pong. Pool tables look trashy. Never have a table game inside your house that isn't isolated to a game room.

Bumper pool. Isn't as big but still fun and competitive.

Just the amount of space that you have to dedicate to a pool table is hard to pull off in newer normal middle class homes these days.

Pool table all day long. Get it setup right if you are serious about playing.

Neither.
But if a choice must be made, ping pong. Because I like playing it, and back in the day I was pretty decent for a hack. Never so with pool.

Quality felt is about $130 and it's a fairly easy process that you can do yourself. They're definitely not much fun to move though, especially if have a solid slab table.
