online exams in college - how do they prevent cheating?

If this was the case when I went to college in 2007 I'd have one computer for the exam and another as a burner to look up answers.
am I missing something or is there newer software these days to help prevent?

It’s timed. If you don’t know the answers, it’s going to take you awhile to look them up. Especially if it’s a math problem or essay answer.

They are proctored via video and if you try to do anything like that they cut off the session a flunk you.

Most of the time when I was in school online test had a timer that didn't allow much time for googling

They have a Proctor program that watches you. If your eyes wander or you move too much they review it.

At least for most of my engineering courses they were open book anyway. Access to the material was never the issue, it was getting the problem done in a certain amount of time.
Having a computer next to you would not have helped.

Uhhhh. Pretty sure I can google a math problem faster than you can cipher one.

Apparently people don't understand a proctored test many programs also let the professor know if you go to another screen.

Is it really "cheating" if that is exactly how you do it these days in the real world?
Of course you are looking up the answers for an online college class. Are you kidding me I wouldn't spend even a second worrying about an online college test.
Thats all we are doing out here in the real world anyway. I google how to accountant right every day and I have my CPA.

I’d just wear glasses that have a built in video camera and wear a hidden Bluetooth earbud. Then have a smart person watching the video and give me the answer via the earbud.

I think they have special web browsers that prevent the student from doing anything else but the test. Those same programs also let the instructor monitor the student through the webcam.

We spend to much time remembering stuff instead of solving problems... Our education system is taking steps backwards.

i mean let's be honest... online testing is nowhere near as legit as when the professor walked around the classroom and i had the formulas wrote under the cover of my TI calculator, now that was a challenge

TI-84
Put the entire contents of the class on the saved memory pages of the calculator. Text and everything.
Take two hours and you could just write the entire textbook on there.
It was harder figuring out which page you needed to look at than taking the test.

I finished the last 36 credits for my undergraduate degree online. I learned more in those classes than the time spent on campus at LSU.
Almost all of my classes had required discussion posts relevant to the course material, which were graded very harshly. There was really no way to bullshite the answers if you wanted a good grade on the assignment.
The tests and quizzes were either proctored online, with someone watching you the entire time you were taking the exam, or had to completed with a browser lockdown program. They would be timed in a manner which left you no time to look up the answer, and then submit your response if you hadn’t studied for the test.
In many classes I was also required to participate in online learning sessions with either the TA or the professor.
If administered correctly, online learning can be an effective and viable option.

do I want a doctor that can critically thinks about my case or one that uses webMD?
