On this day in 1866, Ulysses S. Grant became the first 4-star general in U.S. Army history

Probably because he had a lot of shite weighing on his mind at that particular time. He was the General-in-Chief of what was essentially a military occupation of the former Confederate States of America.

Has he ever done anything slightly racist? Need to know if he’ll eventually be canceled before we can celebrate him today

Strange that the US doesn’t have the title Field Marshal... pretty much every major military had/has the distinction... Grant would’ve definitely been one.

Where have you been? He married into a slave-owning family and owned a slave himself (a slave which he set free rather than selling for a small fortune). He also worked alongside the slaves in the fields of his father-in-law's plantation.

We have to be different and always have been different. When it was decided that an American officer would be the Supreme Allied Commander during World War II, the United States had to come up with a rank that was the equivalent of the British field marshals that would be serving under him. So we created a 5-star general's rank and, instead of naming the new rank "field marshal," we decided to call it "General of the Army."

Honestly, he looks like a drunk.

That’s a damn good picture for being that old, though.

It was colorized. Color photography didn’t truly become used until around 1900

Continued policy of forcing Indians into concentration camps and killing those that resisted. If Confederate statues come down so should the Indian killers

Yes technically and by law Grant did own Blabk man and a Black mother-daughter combo. As the Fugitive Slave Act became the legal law of the land, Grant freed his single Black male slave (even turning down 1 thousand dollars) to free him. He then freed the mother - daughter combo but asked them to stay on a little bit longer as free women.

Imagine what he could have done to Robert E. Lee and his army had he fought him sober.

Probably kill many more of his own soldiers than he did with the Confederacy's resources and manpower. No commanding general had more men killed off from his ranks in the Civil War than that of Robert Edward Lee.
