The only locks I'm aware of are the ones by alligator bayou bar.

Did they say why they're not going to use the locks? Can't flow enough, or can't handle the flow, or anything like that?

I didn't catch anything that said why they wouldn't just use locks. I hope nothing goes wrong for our sake. If they cut that 70 ft wide section and we get a big storm coming in then they're just opening the floodgates.

ETA: Just caught the reason for the locks. They said the locks aren't big enough to get the volume of water out of the swamp that they need in order to alleviate the people south of Manchac. They're making the cut to get a quicker flow in the opposite direction. But cut may not happen until tomorrow, just depends on water levels

Think the locks would take too long. Last time water piled up back there it took almost 3 weeks to get it out, and it wasn't nearly this high. Maybe it was December 2012 when we had that record month of rain?

I don't remember the year but I remember it was during hunting season.

Lack of flow is a good enough reason for me. They just better have enough shite on standby to plug the hole back up right quick and in a hurry if needed.

I've got no clue where Frog Bayou locks are.

Guy said that "locks are 300 yards apart, can stand on one and see the other."

Cut wouldn't be made until Manchac side is 2' lower than road. Apparently the 14'+ gauge that we are seeing now is the Manchac side. The 13'- gauges are on the Bluff/AB side.

Manchac Gauge

This is the one that tells you what the water on the manchac side of alligator bayou is doing.

ETA: this is also a rare gauge in that 0 gauge height is "sea level"

Plan is to make a "controlled cut"

Should not have used or kept using the word "controlled." Can't say such things when talking about natural forces like this.

Could be days before Manchac is low enough for them to do this. It's not an effort to stop the current flooding but to get rid of the water in that basin after the flooding stops.

I bet the conversation went like this....
"Man....people are going to freak out when we say we're cutting the road/levee."
"Yeah, you're right."
"I got it! Let's tell them it'll be a 'controlled' cut."
"Brilliant!!!!"

After seeing the total destruction of that road, making a cut seems sketchy.

The year of high water was 2013. They used pumps to get water out of Bluff Seamp but it took a while and people along Bluff Rd. were not happy.

I understand why they are trying this, but if this gets out of "control" and water starts stacking up towards Springlake and UClub I'm going to be uneasy.

Yes, who in their right mind breaks a levee (the road) during a flood event. I wonder how the neighbors to the north in CCLA feel about a possible intentional levee break at their back door.

Yeah, it would be nice for that to NOT happen

Yeah, Greg M. brought that up and made a comment that he didn't see any EBR representatives at that press conference.

is that a sign that the flow is going toward Amite more than BS?

That was my first thought as well. No fricking way can they control the amount of washout this will cause. I see this going wrong quickly.
