However, Dateline and America’s Most Wanted believed McDermott disappeared to avoid paying money he owed, including thousands in child support, Action News Jax reported.

Were they married? That would explain a lot. There was recently a guy who lived in the mountains for years to get away from his wife.

I dont have any shitty puns to offer, but I’m pretty sure he’s been believed to have faked his own death since he went missing. I’ve seen at least 2-3 Dateline-type stories on him. I’m actually surprised the Coast Guard ever concluded he died, because as far as I could tell, very few people bought that.
