Just had to put down my American Bulldog mix on Tuesday at the ripe age of about 15 and a half.
His hind legs had been giving out on him over the last year or year and a half due to a neurological issue and late last week he finally stopped taking interest in food. Would eat treats pretty well, but just couldn't get around under his own power reliably. Had the most issues when trying to just stand still, i.e. to eat and drink. Managed to go use the bathroom on his own (never had an accident in all those years), but you could tell he was struggling to do that, too. Came home Saturday to him panting pretty badly (a sign of pain) and knew it was time.
Had a mobile vet come out to euthanize him at home. Ate some treats beforehand and even got a chunk of salmon I had cooked for dinner the night before, which he seemed to thoroughly enjoy.
I miss him terribly.

Pretty similar to what happened to our lab who made it to 11. Most loyal and caring dog Ive ever had. didn't even really show interest in other dogs at all. She just did what you told her to do. She somehow understood you, which i never understood because we never trained her and had her as a pup. she had been slow for the last 2 months but still was doing walks around the block. One day she just fell and couldnt get up. She would still eat but she would have to be laying down. about 2 days later she miraculously was able to make it in the back yard and back in the house. But the next night she became unresponsive but breathing. I thought I was going to have to put her down in the morning but she was able to pass on her own that night. There hasn''t been a day where I havent missed her.

Sorry for your loss, man. It really sucks. Mine was an outdoor dog outside of bad weather and looking out to an empty back yard and dog house hasn't fully set in yet. I just hate the thought of him not being out there now.

This old girl here:
I've had her since she was 8 weeks old, she's now 14 years old and still going strong. We've been through a lot together, going to be a bad day when she's gone.

My in-laws just had to put down their 18 year old poodle. They took it hard, but it was time. The dog was pretty much blind and pretty much deaf and was at the point where it would whine constantly when the guy was not holding it. It had no quality of life left.

Yep, Sarah Belle was a beautiful dog, but her last year was pretty rough.

I have had an aussie that lived to 16 and a chocolate lab that lived to 4 days shy of 18.
My father in law has a 28 year old horse. That is old as hell for a horse.

My beagle made it to 15 years and three days before having the vet come to the house and put her down.

We had a Cocker Spaniel when I was younger that lived to the ripe old age of 18. My dad had her put down because her kidneys were failing. She was one hell of a dog.
