Waaaaaay back it was not uncommon for 40+ year old men whose wives died to marry as young as 14. Native American Indian girls were usually the young ones.

oddly enough, a lot of those marriages seem to last, don't know if it's coercion, fear of shame, or they just grow to fall in love? also common in those countries is the acceptance of discrete side pieces

Not even sure i really paid attention but, at 17-18, i had no interest in any one younger. My girlfriends were always older than me

In some states it's legal with parental consent to marry at 14.
Eta: the minimum legal age in Louisiana with parental consent is 16. An emancipated 16yo can marry in Texas.

16 is incorrect
So the ages of both people play a part and also if you’re married.

Pretty sure it used to be 16 was ok if you were within 2 years of age, and if not, 17 was the green light for any age.
