I just killed a king snake this morning, I couldn't confirm it was a king snake till after it was dead. My only thought was that it was a snake so kill it with fire - task completed.

That is one of them spitting cobras, they spit venom and acid. As soon as acid touches skin, it explodes for 150hit points.

Good luck with the copperhead that moves onto your property because the king snake isn't there.
