Why can’t they pull the engine specs from the Gen 4 4Runner and just build that. Please?
Because the purple haired climate alarmists said no. You can’t have that anymore.

Our 09 Odyssey Touring has VCM, but I disabled it with one of the muzzlers available from concerned Odyssey enthusiasts. It wasn't the cylinder wall degradation that really bothered people, it was the $1,000+ cost to replace the active motor mounts prematurely failing due to the VCM kicking in and out.
Our Ody runs like a Swiss watch but it only has about 140,000 miles on it. Paint job is completely thrashed. Stupid paint regulations.

The government won't let them because they keep squeezing manufacturers on emissions and fuel economy. You had engines that were bulletproof because they were perfected over decades, and now manufacturers are forced to adopt new tech in a way that makes it virtually impossible to have the same reliability as those old engines.
That and emissions. That's why they have gone to turbos and smaller engines lately. Recirculating the exhaust gas through a second burn cycle helps emission ratings. Not great for longevity, but good for meeting government requirements.

I think the 4.0L V6 and 5 speed auto will still be an optional engine on the 70 series Land Cruiser overseas. They'll probably be built somewhere in the world for another two decades. Americans will just have to get a used 5th gen Toyota 4Runner if they want it.
The new 4Runners are hot garbage. A big part of the 4Runner's appeal were their old school nature and their bulletproof reliability. Those aren't guaranteed in all Toyotas anymore - especially not new ones.
Glad that Nissan has officially announced that they are bringing Armada production to Mississippi and they will have a new XTERRA SUV on sale within a couple of years. Toyota was begging for that to happen with their pricing and design decisions.
The Nissan Frontier is an excellent new pickup with an old school V6 engine and a chassis that dates back to about 2005. If Nissan's dealers (and the Nissan brand) were a little less sketchy, I think the Frontier would be vastly more popular. I can't recommend that pickup enough over the Tacoma.

I know of one person with a Pilot that had an engine blow up.
Honda is it what it was In the early 2000s

Yeah, because engines in the 60s never failed.
Engines could barely make 60k miles.

The quality of virtually everything is in significant, rapid decline.

I installed a VCM Tuner/Muzzler on our 2015 Odyssey that deactivates the VCM. When we first got it you could visibly feel it kick in and continue to vibrate.
VCM and MDS are second only to the auto stop/start as the worst features that no one asked for. I fricking hate how my truck kicks in and out of the MDS in city driving. I've already disabled the auto stop/start bullshite.

At least they brought back the old school oil pump in the L84 5.3L motor a year or two ago. But didn’t admit that they did it because the old setup sucked. But that’s why they did it.
The 5.3L V8 and Honda's 3.5L VTEC have also been a fixture for years in trucks that are often on the "top 10 most likely to reach 250,000 miles" list every year: The Honda Ridgeline, Honda Pilot, Chevrolet Tahoe, Chevrolet Silverado, and Chevrolet Suburban.
I think the GM recall was on the 6.2L V8 that uses a machined crankshaft and Mexico assembly though. And I suspect that the Honda V6 issues are fairly narrow in production/date ranges.

My opinion is that's a stupid click bait news story. From the the NHTSA website.
414 received reports for 1.4 million vehicles. even if the actual failures are 20 times higher that ain't shite.

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has received 414 reports of connecting rod bearing failures in the 3.5L V6 engine used in the following vehicles: Model Years (MY) 2018-2020 Acura TLX, MY2016-2020 Acura MDX, MY2016-2020 Honda Pilot, MY2018-2020 Honda Odyssey, and MY2017-2019 Honda Ridgeline

I see this a lot when these discussions come up. Comparing a 60s engine to a 90's motor while trying to defend these new regulations is at best disingenuous.
Not to mention that in the 60s one could completely overhaul that engine for less than $200 and likely get another 60k miles out of it.

So many more moving parts now something has to break.

Modern Toyota engines have been very disappointing.
BUT NO...we have to save the planet so lets choke the engine with "filters"!!!!
