it's pretty remarkable, tbh. not sure if it's due to incompetence of the countries involved (namely malaysia) or what... it's pretty crazy.

I'm just glad trans-ocean routes don't go over the middle of the ocean. WE'd never find anything if the event of a crash there.

Seems like we are at the top of the arc of interesting vs. boring.

At this point I think I will partially disappointed if it just crashed. Seems to be so many strange things that occurred it forces you to believe there's a lot more to this story still to come.

Twice a month I fly over the Atlantic then over the Sahara. Both would be equally shitty to crash in IMO.

I've seen the story of the bomber crew that crashed in the Sahara during WWII. They survived the crash.

That fate seemed pretty terrible.

I think it was total electrical failure or something to that extent. Transponder went off, communication knocked offline and pilots got confused. Sudden u-turn is awfully suspicious though. Also good chance copilot may have had something to do with it. Honor is a big thing in Asian culture. Maybe he was drunk and pilot called him out and he freaked. Others here have said he was a partier. Didn't want to dishonor family. I wonder what the relationship was like between pilot and copilot? Just throwing shite out there.

It could be. Or could just be them returning to the nearest/airport of departure after the "event."

the stuff you threw out in the first half seems much more reasonable than the second half.

itd seem "massive failure that the pilots mishandled" is probably the safe betting money. especially compared to "drunk asian copilot scared of dishonoring his family hijacking plane and crashing it."

Occam's Razor.

A turn across their original flight plan is a sign of some very unspecified trouble. A 180-degree "come about" - without contact, could very, very easily be a "return to station" type maneuver.

I'd be surprised if modern aircraft wouldn't have battery backup of some type for the case of electrical failure. Not that it would last an extended period.

More info about possible terrorists on board here.

EDIT: They say terrorism is not suspected, sorry I jumped too quickly.
quote:

Local newspaper Berita Harian quoted Malaysian air force chief Gen. Rodzali Daud as saying radar at a military base had detected the airliner at 2:40 a.m. near Pulau Perak at the northern approach to the strait, a busy waterway that separates the western coast of Malaysia and Indonesia’s Sumatra island.

“After that, the signal from the plane was lost,” he was quoted as saying.

A high-ranking military official involved in the investigation confirmed the report and also said the plane was believed to be flying low. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the information.

“It changed course after Kota Bharu and took a lower altitude. It made it into the Malacca Strait,” a senior military officer told Reuters.

quote:

Also Tuesday, authorities said two people who boarded the flight using stolen passports were Iranians who had purchased tickets to Europe. Their use of stolen documents had raised speculation of a possible terrorist link.

quote:

He said speculation of terrorism appeared to be dying down “as the belief becomes more certain that these two individuals were probably not terrorists.”

All Boeing 777s are equipped with emergency back ups. There's a reason why it's considered to be the safest jet in the world to travel on. The chances of everything shutting down are less than winning the lottery.
