not that common, but some indentured servitude like system is still used in third world countries.
Like prison style labor.
But usually children and women under 30 are the targets of human trafficking. Stealing a plane for that reason makes less sense than the time/space portal.

It was pretty far away from any radar. I wouldn't rule out it being shot down.
