In 2005, Helios Airways Flight 522 veered only slightly off course on its short hop from Cyprus to Greece, but the crew was ignoring all radio transmissions. After 19 attempts to contact the passenger jet, two F-16s scrambled to intercept the rogue airplane. As they flew alongside Flight 522, the F-16 pilots noticed that the captain's chair was empty, the copilot was lying motionless, and oxygen masks were dangling from the ceiling.
Everyone on board was dead.
Hours after most of the 117 passengers and crew had suffocated, the autopilot remained engaged as the F-16s escorted the ghost plane until it crashed into a hillside in Greece. Subsequent investigations proved that the pilots had failed to pressurize the cabin, but simple explanations could not possibly satisfy those who revel in the possibility of a haunted aircraft.

Could have died like that, it's a peaceful death at least. You sleep first.

Didn't know pilots had so much more control than just going up and down.

I'm not sure when the reports said they climbed to 40,000+ ft and then descended back to around 30,000ft. Could that be the plane climbing because of the Himalayas headed towards their destination. That's if they were heading west then went north through Bangladesh. I'm probably wrong in every single detail but I can't remember all of them in this thread. This whole thing is fascinating just like the Boston Bomber thread.

I think they landed on mt Everest

those are some erie picts ^^

I think the changes in altitude were from the Malaysian radar

If it hit Everest then we would never find out what happened. Already littered with dead bodies that they can't get.

That's what I was wondering. Couldn't remember if it was seen on radar climbing or that the engines recorded that data.

EA6B,
If the transponder is not transmitting, where are they getting the altitude information from?

Creepy pictures. There is something fascinating about airline disasters.

They did report early on that they got some of the altitude data from the engines. Just not sure if that was completely debunked or not.

I feel the same way. Like the one where the young girl survived after their plane came apart at 35,000 ft or so and landed in the Amazon still strapped in her chair next to her mother. Took her like 10 days to walk to civilization. Luckiest/craziest survival story I've heard.

I don't blame them. Big time target in that area

I am as confused as anybody at this point, but I think it was the military air defense radar which probably has capability to determine altitude by using a system that scans in the vertical and horizontal planes. Then there is the engine data packets that were sent out, lot on conflicting info about them containing altitude information or not.

Altitude info was gathered from military radar

I'd imagine intelligence communities are quickly using satellites to inspect any airport/strip anywhere in thar part of the world.

this was days ago. could have acheived their mission then sent the plane back up and then bailed out with it on autopilot.
So many crazy possibilities out there.
Yes I still think we will find pieces of it in the ocean. But I think we will never learn the true fate of the people on the plane. I think the cockpit recorder is going to yield nothing.

Here is a map someone did of radar holes that the plane could have maneuvered around.
Map is even more interesting when you consider that the 200 mile radius coverage circles are for secondary radar coverage with the transponder turned on. The primary coverage with no transponder drops to around 115 miles making it easy to thread the needle and avoid contact.
