I worked in a children's psych unit several years ago and saw an 11 year old boy break a co-worker's jaw with a chair when he flipped his shite. And he was a kid that was mainstreamed in a public school and special education (EBD- Emotional Behavioral Disorder) who exhibited similar behaviors in the classroom and had to be restrained regularly.

People have no idea some of the ECE kids people are dealing with in public schools these days.
You are so correct.

While I'm not denying what he did was wrong, filing assault charges on a 10-year-old is a pretty beta move. The teacher who did that should be freaking embarrassed.

Can someone answer me why kids who get diagnosed as autistic or whatever get some free range to act like complete shits?

I've seen them attack other kids, cause scenes, be utter dickbags and their parent stands there doing nothing, saying some shite like "can't help it, he's autistic."

That would be like someone in a wheelchair going around running over kids and their parent saying "too bad, he's a cripple".

The moment your child starts to affect others well being is the moment he stops getting preferential treatment.

No one is arguing that. If a kid with a history of problems physically hits a teacher or paraprofessional or whatever, that kid should be disciplined. In this particular instance, justice was served. The kid was expelled from school. What I take issue with is the paraprofessional who was unable to let sleeping dogs lie. Instead of being content with the expulsion, said person decided to call the police and file felony assault charges on a 10-year-old child. That is ridiculous.

Wondering if the mom was talking shite and the teacher or whatever decided it was time for the mom to take some responsibility.

My sister in law (no pics) is a teacher and says that autism is a big "excuse" for bad behavior.

Not saying what happened was right or wrong but there is probably plenty that isn't being said.

That's why it's called ASD it's a spectrum, if you've seen one child with autism that's just one child.

Common theme are repetitive motions that soothes or pleases them, lack of eye contact/social interaction, sensation issues, eating problems (textures, combining foods, limited choice of foods) deviations in routines can send some overboard.

Also asberger's is now considered ASD

If the child is autistic then the school has to have an iep in place for the child which the child obtains services in the least restrictive area.

Sounds as if the child needs to be in a resource class with other children that have ASD or MR or learning disabilities and yes these are all different.

The bad behavior is due to the parents enabling the child too much

I've seen some kids with autism that were 11/12 years old that still couldn't tie their shoes bc their parents didn't want their child to learn that.

Now that autism is now a spectrum and includes other diagnosis such as asberger's more children will be diagnosed.

The problem is some parents treat this as if it's a death sentence for their child. I mean hell Sheldon cooper on the Big Bang theory has ASD, depending on where they are on the spectrum many can live pretty normal lives with the right therapy and services.

Trashy mother, trashy kid. The kid physically attacked a teacher. The mother should go to jail for raising such a menace to society

Well it seems obvious he does have autism.

The school apparently didn't give a crap about changing his iep to better him. The school failed this kid but it's still no excuse for him to act like a shitbag. That's his moms fault.

He may have possibly be misdiagnosed

I mean screenings for autism should be done by pediatricians when the child is 24-30 months. Some states start around 18 months but that may be too young

I'd imagine that most special Ed teachers are supposed to be trained for situations like this.

So what exactly is the training? I guess you are supposed to play the role of the perp at your local "lady beware" self defense class...minus the protective gear of course.

Exactly then the administration's hands are tied and the kid can pretty much do what he wants. No more than 10 days of suspension. He can tell them, "frick you" and not worry. Throw a chair at a teacher, no problem. Have seen this so save your breath.
