Our grandparents ate sweets, they ate fat, etc. They just ate less of it. They didn’t worry about carbs or fat free anything

I agree to a point, but that generation ate a lot less processed foods and a lot less carbs. They cooked more and yes, ate decent portion sizes.

There is a price to convenience and it is foods that are a lot less satiating and a lot more carbohydrate heavy.

Look at the “diet” fad from the 80s and 90s. Low fat was king, so what was added to foods that were stripped of fat to make them tasty? Sugar.

We live in a totally different nutritional world than our grandparents did when it comes to the food choices we make.

Lower income people tend to be fatter than the general population.
It's a safe wager that poor people in american have become easily the most obese in the world in the last 50 years.

Try being in your mid 40’s and trying to date. I’m absolutely not dating a fat chick so my options are very limited.

Parents are too lazy
Parents aren’t more lazy, they are jointly working and away from the home and kids more than ever, maybe linear with obesity. This lifestyle is an aberration from the way we lived for 100k years, and food is a great coping mechanism. Thing is if we were able to revert and have more parents at home the whole system would collapse. Less tax revenue, less consuming…

Tweet thread

This is a good theory which boils down to seed oils being a main culprit. Will edit to quote text and charts when I can.

Another good read on the subject

Yes, they do. Because they are largely poor, and do not ILLEGALLY IMMIGRATE as a family unit. Resulting in a diet of cheap fast food.

People in here bring up some good points as the causes. But I think it’s a pretty complex and messy how we got here.

It’s definitely a multifaceted issue.

1. Without looking, the heaviest states likely have the highest numbers of fast food restaurants within a very small radius. Just sitting here at the house I counted five within a 5 mile radius. That’s nuts.

2. With both parents working, you don’t have as many home cooked meals in the average household.

3. My grandparents generation walked a lot more. Even in downtown Louisville. They had a local grocery they walked to. They had a close enough school to walk to. And they had some green space nearby for kids to play even in an urban area.

4. We’ve essentially eliminated recess for kids beyond elementary. So kids who didn’t live in areas where they could get regular outdoor exercise, they don’t get it anywhere now.

5. I know Scruffy mentioned education on nutrition but I haven’t seen that from schools or doctors in awhile. And my insurance didn’t want to cover a nutritionist for me because I didn’t have a metabolic disorder like diabetes.

It doesn’t exist anymore, especially not in schools.

We can debate everything on this but I apologize for getting worked up as well. And your apology is totally accepted.

Meanwhile, I've lost 30 pounds in the last few months, pretty much all by cutting out eating out. Some of the things that the FDA allows in food, it's no wonder we're all fat and unhealthy. I'm not a tree hugger, but I try to eat organic as much as possible, even though I don't believe the FDA's definition of organic is exactly organic.

All you have to do to find the problem is compare us with European countries, which don’t have this issue but are just as lazy as we are.

The difference is what we allow in the food supply and in environment that can make its way into out bloodstreams.

There is no excuse, legit excuse, for not eating moderate portions and getting ample exercise, unless someone is physically and mentally handicapped.

I went on a two week wine and food tour of Italy for my anniversary about 5 years ago. It was amazing, food was incredible, ate and drank everything I wanted, never skipped desert etc.

At the end of two weeks I never felt better my whole life and I was stunned to discover I had lost almost 10 pounds.

We eat shite and toxins, in America and he doesn’t matter if you are vegan etc, our water and air is contaminated, or cookware etc.

I remember a friend of mine was involved in that raid in Texas on that religious compound where they thought they had children brides etc. They grew all their food etc, and the kids were all about 3 to 5 years older than they looked and all skinny beautiful kids.

Also, when they were sent to foster family’s before the government realized the mistake and had to return them they all got sick as shite for weeks on eating “our food” not just fast food it but any of it as lawyer friend was appointed to represent a bunch of them. Even our organic Whole Foods food was so contaminated it made them sick.

If don’t believe me travel somewhere with real food for a few weeks.

We are slowly but surely poisoning ourselves
