Yes, that is why I used the correct term instead of claiming that the white dude was sucker-punched. Like you said, the black guy started the fight and kept following the white dudes while they walked away.
If the black dude just stops following them, no fight.

i think the question would be whether or not his actions were reasonable. given the circumstances here, i think it was very reasonable to beat the guy until he is incapacitated for the following reasons:
a. the trucker had already tried to walk away from the guy once, but NY guy kept coming at him.
b. it's very possible that NY guy could have had a weapon. letting him up could have been the death of the trucker.
c. there were no cops or authorities around to intervene and dissolve the conflict.
i had a friend in high school who got into a fight with a stranger at a party. people were arguing over which music should be playing. some punk thug was running his mouth and my buddy ended up getting in a fight with him. Now, where i'm from, fist fights are very common. Typically, when one guy beats another guy to the ground to the point where the one of them cant fight back, it's over and everyone goes back to their normal life. But on this night, after my friend beat the guy's arse in a fair fight and let him up, the other guy went to his car, got a pistol and came back and shot my friend in the chest, killing him. RIP Justin
for that reason, if i ever find myself in a situation like this, i dont let the guy up until i'm certain that he isnt going to get up and kill me.
Now, I completely understand that walking away before a fight ever starts is the best thing to do. But that is exactly what the trucker tried to do.

Jumped is by no means the correct word. But, if that justifies in your mind what the cab driver did after the fight was clearly over, then you clearly aren't going to change your mind.

He clearly went limp half way through the beating. Either way, he was completely defenseless. There's no reason to continue pummeling someone when you're 100% in control.

Well, first you have 2 guys continuing to walk away and another guy continuing to follow them.
Then, the guy pursuing them walks up to one guy and smacks him in the face.
What PC term would you like to call that? I call it what it was. The black guy walked up and started a fight with the guy that he had been following.
He did not "jump" him in the sense that he leaped from the roof of a building onto the guy he hit.

Sucks the guy took a beating like that but walking away wasn't going to change that guys behavior in the future. He learned a lesson....the hard way. That guy would have been mouthing off and trying to intimidate people again in no time. Probably has had plenty of folks walk away in the past and it just encouraged him to continue with that act. It has been put to a stop now. Better for society.

The laws of self defense vary from state to state. However, nearly every state allows you to defend yourself from physical harm.
The guy who successfully defended himself walked away several times and presented body language (hands down and open) that is indicative of trying to dissolve the situation. He then walked away from the fight and all the way over to his car. The attacker says "frick these (one of the select racist terms not allowed in this thread)" and then immediately walks 60+ feet to confront the guy. He lunges at him and the defender still has his hands at his side in a non aggressive position and then the NY attacker hits him.
He had no other option than to fight. Once fighting you are fighting for your life and there are no rules other than don't lose. If you look closely, despite being face down and having no further control, the NY attacker is still propping himself up on his forearms/hands until the 1:09 mark. The guy that was forced to defend himself stops throwing punches at 1:12 and gets up and off the guy.
Is it brutal, yes
Is it violent, yes
Was it warranted, yes
Once he made the decision to stop he didn't go back and keep kicking the guy or stomp his head in the cement.
Maybe, just maybe, this dumb guy will have learned not to attack others from this. Fortunately for him, he did not die as result of his stupidity. In CCL friendly states with stand your ground laws he may have been shot. A decision that would not have been any more overboard than this fight after the first punch was thrown.

Well, it's not like the guy had much choice other than run away or let the black guy cave his face in. They kept walking away which apparently only emboldened the black guy further so the black guy walked up to him and smacked him in the face.
At that point, the violence was on so his only real error apparently was not stopping at the exact second the black guy was rendered completely threat-less, as viewed after the fact through the soft and non-threatening comfort of our computing devices.
