New York state just issued a drastic new guideline urging emergency services workers not to bother trying to revive anyone without a pulse when they get to a scene, amid an overload of coronavirus patients.

While paramedics were previously told to spend up to 20 minutes trying to revive people found in cardiac arrest, the change is “necessary during the COVID-19 response to protect the health and safety of EMS providers by limiting their exposure, conserve resources, and ensure optimal use of equipment to save the greatest number of lives,’’ according to a state Health Department memo issued last week.

First responders were outraged over the move.

“They’re not giving people a second chance to live anymore,’’ Oren Barzilay, head of the city union whose members include uniformed EMTs and paramedics, fumed of state officials.

Just remember.... You’re government has your back

Why waste good paramedics. Just send the coroner?

Also, this is going to help pad those numbers. Lots of covid related cardiac deaths incoming.

Lies...I'm a front line worker who has coded covid patients. Its a complete waste of resources when it gets to that point.

It protects the staff and it ensures drug supplies.

This is not for EMS protocol, this is for people in the ICU setting who have progressed to intubation with ineffective ventilation strategies, failing organs systems, etc.

Yeah, faith restored in government, and the kind of people who think they can play God in deciding who gets to stay and who has to go.

Consider this fair warning for what the future holds for this country when it does let government control healthcare.

First, this was never implemented.

However, it is hardly a different logic than re-opening more of the economy quicker even if it that may cost a low percentage of lives.

I believe they said about 1/25 of these resuscitations result in saving a life.

If that low percentage causes medical workers who are stretched extremely thin to be later to the next call and/or risk missing shifts exposing themselves, the overall amount of lives they save probably decreases.

At very leadt it's not such a different logic than I've seen tons of people make about risks in cutting back restrictions.

I talked to my son last week. I told him that his mother and I signed DNR papers years ago.
