My wife needs a new stethoscope for work. I would like to get her a good one. What brand is a good one? I know how they work, but I am not familiar with brands.

She might want to. You should give her a call.

It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a nurse use a stethoscope. I’m not around the ICU though which might be the only place I would think they might.

Speaking of medical devices, my proposed band name in "Speculum".

Littmann Classic III is solid for general use, and if she needs it for her work specialty, Littmann Cardiology IV is also good. There are some digital ones now Littmann CORE Digital Stethoscope that have sound amplification with noise cancellation. Whatever your wallet can handle . . . .

If she tells you she needs one, ask her why she can't just use the disposable ones her place of employment offers and save a couple of hundos. We rarely use them anyway. She most likely is a new nurse who just wants to look 'cute' or wants to hang it on her rearview mirror so it can melt inside a month.

Only answer is Littman. The classic if money is an issue. Cardiology is a little more but worth it. Get her a cute color. Inscription on it is nice thought and can help in identifying it, but it will not prevent someone else forgetting to return it. My wife collects IDs, watch, or something else whenever she lends hers out.

Also, nurses in the hospital DO use them pretty much every shift.

This is false. You don’t need a stethoscope to do the job of a nurse and provide excellent care. It’s just a tool to help in the care. I’ve saved lives without the use of one plenty of times. I’ve also worked with plenty of physicians that don’t use one on a daily basis.

If she just needs a stethoscope to work, classic Littman is good. You can really do the job with any stethoscope.

The money spent on a fancy stethoscope would be better used for nice shoes.

I have a really nice Littman. It’s in my closet. The cheap stethoscopes that hang on anesthesia carts work fine. Drs also like to steal nice pens and stethoscopes.
