Older muscle cars were inexpensive. They really weren't special at the time.

I dove an 81 GMC Sierra in HS. It wasn't anything special at the time. A lot of guys had nicer vehicles. I'd love to have it now. It looked about like this with bigger tires.
ETA - I started driving in 1993 so it was a 12 yr old truck at the time. Thing was a tank and possibly the best vehicle I've ever owned.

I had a 67 Pontiac Catalina, with the 400.
Some of the rich kids had camaros and Trans Ams. Not many at our school though.
Buddy of mine had an MG Migdet, we would pick it up and turn it sideways to where he was stuck in the parking lot.

Muscle cars in our parking lot but not many.
We didn't have many cars.
Most rode the bus BUT that was 17 and down.
It wasn't until we were out of high school before we bought our cars in my area.
All the cars in the parking lots later was due to one of our failures - buying OUR kids cars.
Every generation benefits but are spoiled by the riches of their parents.

we used to do that to my buddy's Datsun truck. If he parked next to the ditch, his tires were going in it after football practice.

My paw paw was 60 years older than me but provided my first several. I plowed fields and bush hogged all summer and after school for it. My upbringing sounds a lot like a bro country song actually

Most kids at my school were working/middle class. Most worked for the things they purchased. Wasnt much wealth around at the time.
70s were one massive stretch of recessions. But people partied..
