Many cars today look similar thanks to aerodynamic goals and crash standards.
Has little to do with designers being less creative.

I’d argue the opposite. MB looks very unique amongst current luxury options.

That's not a new development either. Back in the mid/late '70s, Ford had the balls to run an ad campaign suggesting most people could not tell the difference between a Ford Granada/Mercury Monarch and a Mercedes sedan (I don't remember which one). The print ads had six or eight pairs of pics - tail lights, head lights, grill, etc. - from both cars and challenged the reader to try and recognize the difference.
I don't know how successful the ad campaign was - I was fifteen and not in the market for a new car - but I scored 100% on their test.

I loved those 450SLs from the late seventies and early eighties. Those 3 and 5 series BMWs from that time were cool too.

A Granada never looked like a benz but I am sure Ford tried to say that. Those ads are not very convincing to me.
There was a HUGE difference in quality in seventies and early eighties between domestics and German and Japanese cars. The domestics were really crap. X cars and K cars were particularly bad.

All cars are being designed in wind tunnels now - the extreme CAFE standards of the U.S. government allows little deviation - all coupes/sedans will look increasingly alike going forward. Basically, the shape is dictated by aerodynamics for maximum efficiency. Ditto for crossovers. Light trucks will be a thing of the past in fewer years than you think - unless something changes on the CAFE front.
