Trump's presidency will be a pretty short chapter since it hasn't really had a pivotal historic event like a 9/11 or Gulf War, or Berlin Wall coming down, etc.
I was very fortunate to get to hear firsthand from my grandfather (Navy Corpsman on Iwo Jima...landed and was off the island before he turned 18). Ordinary men asked to do extraordinary things

I get the sentiment, but I wouldn't call it "a shame" or "sad".
It's a good thing that we don't have wars like that anymore.
I'm hoping The Long Peace will last for many more decades.
I saw the following FB post last night:
FACT:
In the 243 years since the Declaration of Independence, the United States has been involved in some form of war for 227 years. That leaves 16 years of peace.
Amazing.

the obsessive romanticizing of WW2 is what lead to the evolutionary stagnation of US to adapt or refine doctrine, strategy, and tactics in future campaigns e.g. Vietnam.

War is good for business. It will always be with us in some form or fashion

It sadly kinda is for me, I barely remember anyone who fought in it from my family.
My great uncle fought in the pacific against the japanese. Crudest man youd meet in the 1980s. Arms covered in war related and anchor tattoos.

The US has been at peace a total of 17yrs in its existence. Which “Long Peace” are we talking about? A US soldier died in Afghanistan 2 days ago.

Long peace--we have been at war in the middle east for 18 years now.

The Long Peace does not just mean the US...

This post got me to thinking.
I was born in 1941 - 76 years after the end of the Civil War in 1865.
Today, 2019, is 74 years after the end of WWII.
Just an interesting CSB

The further away we get, the more the lessons will fade away.
Denial of certain WWII events, or believing the nazis 'weren't that bad' seems to be more prevalent now as people choose what to believe and find fringe websites to back it up. Sad and dangerous.

I finished my service in 1964 prior to most of the build-up in that area. I had a continuing reserve obligation, but was never called-up.

Many college kids cannot tell you where Vietnam is much less about the war

The countries we helped defeat in this era have successfully infiltrated our education system, with the help of the progressive left, to rid our children of learning actual history.
WW2 will soon be viewed as a crime on the part of the US. It is bad enough you already have tens of millions of leftist idiots calling a President Hitler.
They say history is written by the winners, but that is not the case any longer.

Like the south does by calling the Civil War the war of "Northern Aggression"?
That is, at worst, tongue in cheek.
But sherman can still burn in hell.

Of course not. College freshmen weren't even alive when 9-11 happened.
God I’m getting old. There are now newly minted lawyers who were only in about third grade on 9/11. Time flies when you’re living.

This is very true.
I woke up this morning thinking about what would make 2019 better.
The first answer that popped in my head?
Hitler.
