So much focus on making it to advanced math concepts.

So many college graduates still cant balance their check book. Maybe more people should concentrate on simple math longer than working towards being able to one day solve a differential equation.

Its gone down because of the influx of stupid Canadians.

Really? Because several posters including 3 math minors all noted they did not know the word or see it used in testing

You do understand that a "math minor" doesn't have any special insight into this particular discussion, right?

I didn't say that...but, some of the backlash in this thread certainly falls in-line with the typical insecurity parents have when it comes to helping their kids with math. "Well, I'm not stupid...THE WAY THEY ARE TEACHING IS STUPID. COMMON CORE, DERP."

Well I am certainly graduated without a liberal arts focus, and don't remember ever being asked to solve 3 plus 5 by any method other than the one that resulted in the correct answer.

So, you never took diff eq/calc 2 or higher?

but nice try.

It is because they don't know the basic fundamentals of math that they can't balance their checkbook.

I think this is your problem. The term is so basic and taught so early you don't remember it. I don't remember every mathematical term I learned 15+ years ago, let alone 30.

It was definitely taught to me.

So then parents complained just the same 30+ years ago when we were kids?

Or maybe JUST MAYBE a teacher used one of these terms and never bothered forcing minuend and the subtrahend on their kids knowing it would never be remembered?

How many are left?
How many are left over?
How many more than...?
How many less than...?
How many more are needed?
How many do you have to take away to get....?
How many fewer?
How much less?

Is that aimed at me?

Because I agree that critical thinking should be applied. What I dont agree with is that the parents dont see it in the work the kids are bringing home. What I am getting at is the instructions are lacking.

You just sound dumb. This stuff isn't advanced math.

And what do you blame that on? This common core method you all are complaining about hasn't been around that long, even though you fail to grasp that all it is the same math previously taught, but in a better way than just memorization.

So not hearing a term ever mentioned while taking more classes on the subject short of anyone with a masters or PhD in the subject doesn't pertain to the subject.. mmmmkay buddy.

But its just so damn important to make sure kids utilize a word that obviously will be forgotten by all but 1% them by time they are in the work force. Because as you say it was taught to us all and forgotten by all but you.

I had a polish professor who couldn't communicate worth a damn. It was horrible.

LOL Yep, I totally fall into the incapable, unintelligent derp crowd.

I am far from needing to help my kids with math. Or thankfully I should say, they are far from needing help with math. They do however, need help with their worksheets and processes because apparently knowing the correct answer is not good enough, they need to know rarely used terms and know abstract doubles plus 1 facts to balance their checkbook later.

So you are upset because your kids have to prove they got the answer without cheating?

So what your argument then? One second you are spouting that they need to learn it "this way" to help them with advanced math. Now you are saying that this isn't about advanced math?

I'm saying that instead of constantly pushing people to get to calculus and higher maybe we should spend more time teaching them the basics. Common Core isn't doing that any more than the prior teaching methods. It is absurd the amount of math most majors are required to take. I majored in both Microbiology and Computer Science. Graduated in CSC with Math Minor. 14 years later only math I use is what I learned briefly in grade school. Yet I spent as much time learning advanced levels of math as I did programming. Time and money would have been better spent for most understanding what the amortization on a mortgage means than the process to compute some random differential equation with no meaning.

You know the word "quotient" when it comes to division don't you? You know the word "product" when it comes to multiplication don't you? How often do you use those words? Subtrahend and minuend are just more basic words that make up an equation. It is far from crazy for second graders to be using these words...the very basics of math.

Lack of responsibility.
Lack of desire.
Over abundant financial assistance and forgiveness.
Substance use and abuse.
Failure to be forced to balance their checkbook due to parental funding.
Over populated colleges with underachieving tuition paying students.
Depression.

to name a few.
