Yeah, when people say "Blockbuster", I just assume they are talking about video stores in general.
We had memberships at both Blockbuster and Movie Gallery when I was growing up. We'd go to BB first to see if they had what we wanted, and if not, we'd head over to the MG down the road.
My summers consisted of having weekend sleepovers with friends or cousins, renting a few games, and staying up all night playing WWF Royal Rumble, WCW vs NWO, Cruisin USA, etc.
Toys R Us was usually a once or twice a year treat where we'd go in, shop, and pick out what we wanted for Christmas or a birthday. The video stores were an every weekend type of deal, thus generating more memories.

The market literally demanded this, drove a massive change in infrastructure (high speed internet) and changed even the nature of television viewing.

correct. look at the thread title. toys r us and blockbuster are just the 2 most well known names.

Toys R Us. But back in my youth is was KMart. And then there was the Sears' wish book...

You can still go to a library and rent movies, so that experience is still there.

Target is starting to do some of this, making the toy area a bit more special. IF they were smart they would build it out alot more. I think whoever makes the toy section more of an experience for kids will be at a huge advantage.
Parents are looking for a "destination" type place to take their kids. Cool displays etc would help alot with that.
