Your rankings were awesome. This thread is a good guide in general for demonstrating how quality companies change. I think Eddie Bauer was a legit outdoors company back in the day before they went the way of American Eagle. I had a gore tex knockoff from them that lasted 20 years. I also learned from the Peter Millar thread yesterday to rock 1/4 zip sweaters instead of fleece around the office.

Is Under Armour closer to 6 or 100 on the rankings scale?

Eddie Bauer had a Ed Viesturs associated brand, First Ascent, which was more legit. I think it still exists but I'm not sure how good it is or if EB is still emphasizing it.

As for UA, I don't really know about their more "outdoor" gear, but it does seem like they're pushing more to get into hiking and backpacking, and it makes sense that they do. Seems like Adidas tried that too recently, but may have died off. I like UA a lot for working out and lounging so I'd try a soft shell or something if I had a need.

I bought a nice $400 coat a few years ago, I wore it once.

So now I could give a damn about winter fashions.

I'm still wearing short sleeves in December.

I fly fish and I think I know zero people who would make the effort to shite on Orvis like this.

Meh I know plenty and many have guided, worked in the industry, or are fishbums who spend 100+ days on the water a year. The nickname "whorvis" stuck for a reason. There is a fly fishing thread on the outdoor board that this discussion would be better suited for than this abortion of a thread however.

This thread is gay, not that there's anything wrong with that.

She wasn't a co-founder. Kristine worked for Chouinard under Chouinard Equipment and basically ran his business while he was out climbing. She eventually became CEO after it was Patagonia.

They were all a close knit climbing group that pioneered the sport and started clothing and equipment companies. Yvon Chouinard(Patagonia), Tom Frost(Black Diamond which was initially Chouinard Equipment), Royal Robbins(Royal Robbins). There's a great documentary about it all which focuses on their climbing.

Go watch 180° South (Netflix) and it touches on their friendship and such and the journey they made together to Patagonia. Great guys. This documentary will make anyone want to pack up and go Love this quote from Chouinard:

Orvis doesn't make it's nut on fishing gear. It makes it's nut on pretentious expensive

If you're being honest, Fly fishing on the whole is a pretentious sport.

I agree with a lot of this but as much as I hate to admit it

Arc'teryx > Patagonia

The midlayer stuff is probably equal, Arc'teryx Atom LT is awesome, but so is the Patagonia nano air. Arcteryx destroys atagonia in shells. They are more durable and well put together. Patagonia's H2No membrane is crap, but I do not like the goretex offerings either. Arcteryx shells are top notch, but I greatly prefer Neoshell and then Event offerings from other companies over Goretex Pro.
