You raise a good point. Why are folks in New Orleans so much more violent than most other places in the country?
symptom of government policies dating back to the Great Depression. Laissez faire attitude in the city. Some of the largest tracks of experimental public housing was built in a city that created a dependent class. Deplorable public education. Crack epidemic..... we could go on forever.

Like I said, this is prevalent in a lot of American cities. There has to be another factor that's causing this. Laissez faire attitude could be one of them.

That's prevalent in most American cities. There has to be something else that sets NOLA apart, right

How many of those cities have a 60% population that is composed of that culture?

More than 50% of the black male population is unemployed. That's almost impossible to wrap my head around

Not sure. Just asking questions as to a possible explanation of why NOLA residents are so violent.

1933 - public works department created the Emergency Housint corporation
1934 - National housing act of '34
1937 - US Housing Autority was created.

And so on and so on... this is the time period you created these huge arse projects in the urban centers.

1944 and the next couple decades during and post war you had the Serviceman Readjustment Act (GI bill)
1947 - Congress est the Housing and Home financing agency

-The VA, HOLO, FHA
-'exclusionary covenants' were written into title deeds and r al estate neighborhood redlining.

-suburban expansion post-war took off while many blacks in the south were effectively barred from homeownership.

-in the race to the burbs, business and manufacturing followed the middle class

Leaving these massive projects like the St Thomas and Desire to turn into breeding grounds for the poor.

New Orleans was on the forefront of all this meddling by the federal government into housing and what we have now is the end result.

None of this will be reversed over night. But seeing how the vicious cycle was started and perpetuated is the only way to find a way out of this decay.

I don't think government policy to fix government policy is the way to go.

I have family that lived here in public housing at this time period and have heard stories of the drastic change/complete 180 that happend in some instances less than a decade.

I guess I'm seeing in your explanation that giving poor people all the free shite they need to survive causes them to be more violent.

To be fair. Crime in Louisiana is higher per capita than anywhere else (I think)
This isn't an isolated New Orleans problem

more than 40% of the male population (white black brown) have a felony record. As much as we don't want to admit it, we live in a police state. Yeah don't break laws and you won't go to jail, but don't have so many jails that you have to create laws to fill up as well.

People are looking for easy fixes to complex problems.

Never said it was. I think we have a higher percentage of culcha than most places in the country too.

Gotta make living self-sufficient more desirable than living off the govt. And that's not so easy when education is shunned, being in a neighborhood gang is encouraged, and moving out/away is seen as betraying your family and neighborhood.

The projects are absolutely depressing.

Think how you would be if:

Your dad was never around to beat the shite out of you
Your mom doesn't care what you do
School is an afterthought
Going to that school and succeeding makes you an outcast or an uncle tom
You have no job and can just get fricked up 24/7/365
All your friends are in the same boat

Gotcha. It just seems new Orleans is picked on exclusively when this really is a statewide issue.

Baton rouge. Monroe are also both top 20 per capita in terms of violence

why NOLA residents are so violent.

1) service/tourist economy provides target rich environment, with easy access to those targets
2) crippling generational poverty, in a near 3rd world way, completely dependent on handouts
3) it's hot

I guess man, if that's how you want to read it and break it down as elementary as possible.... I keep seeing the 'cultcha' word you are using, maybe that is it.... I mean do you just think 'blacks' are inherently more violent due to the color or their skin or something? I mean if we want to break it down all elementary and shite.

I'm trying to convey that is a complex problem but I don't think most want to talk about it all, they would rather post hashtags and cultcha in a 'us vs them' tone....

Another day on the OT

In nola?

I imagine their felony records aren't filled up with dumping illegal wastes or failure to dispose of whatever whatever

It's drugs and violent crimes along with not showing up to court.

The fix is having 2 parents properly raise these kids growing up in this. Having a father around to smack the hell out of you when you act like an idiot would work wonders

That's way off
i could be off...but I remember the 40% figure. Don't know if it was in Nola or La. I actually read it in the times pic. It was an article about how SC and LA was far and away the most locked up states in the free world.

ETA: also it was something about Kenneth Polite bringing some initiative to help get felons a job

And yes I still read the actual news paper
