No, it isn't that dumb. While I can't speak to these parents, I can say from first-hand experience that hiding in your house for months after such a tragedy is more ordinary than out of it.
The optics of things such as this can be easily construed into a narrative that the boy wasn't cared about. What I believe is that these parents are getting faux support from these opportunists who are using these parents for a photo op. Eventually these parents will be left behind. What they do then is on them.

I absolutely wouldn't stay home for 3+ months

There’s nothing to be gained by judging someone’s grief. It’s incredibly complex and there’s often dissociation. I don’t agree with the stance they’ve taken, but I’m not going to question their pain.

Its a picture. I am not exactly referring to them, its just a general comment, a picture of someone smiling doesn't really indicate anything. People automatically smile when someone says they are taking a picture.
