The S&WB old turbines will no longer be the primary source of power for the pumps.

Great news!

Entergy will be taking over.

Oh god.

The proverbial "from the frying pan to the fire" applies here.

The Sewerage & Water Board plans to switch to Entergy New Orleans as its main power source under a deal announced Wednesday aimed at replacing the aging and ailing turbines that power the city’s drainage system, city and utility officials announced Wednesday.

Why anyone with any sense still lives in Orleans Parish perplexes me.

So when Entergy Intentionally shuts off the power or loses power during a storm city will flood and more boil water advisories??

To be fair though this only currently happens 9/10 times it rains or the wind is slightly higher than normal

That's what I'm thinking.

Or something will be installed wrong and fail at the worst possible time.

Oh you mean the recommendation that was made by qualified engineers and experts in 2005!?!?!?!?!?!?

Why didn’t the switch happen then when there was an open federal checkbook?

Oh I know why, it would ultimately cut jobs from the bloated, incompetent, and irredeemably crooked sewerage and water board. To hell with this institution and everyone that has propped up this tax payer funded jobs program for worthless individuals.

Eta
Recommendation was to update the power supply. Not necessarily give it to Entergy.

Yup.

But... understand we are simply moving from a government-sponsored bloated, incompetent, and crooked entity, to a private-sponsored one.

The last boil advisory we had was because Entergy shut off the power to the Carrollton station so they could repair some poles that were snapped in the tornado that came through and they didn’t let SWB know and the new water towers didn’t do what they were designed and built to do

So the city's drainage system will be solely at the mercy of the power grid that goes out in most strong tropical storms?

Aren’t they supposed to hold the pressure at a certain level if/when the power goes out for a certain amount of time.

Matt McBride explained all this in a very lengthy Facebook post a couple days after the boil water advisory

Why and the hell are the pumps not powered by natural gas?

The towers are rated to last so long, and it's not that long (maybe 15 min).

It goes out on sunny days because a cat jumped a fence. Or someone let balloons into the sky a mile away.

While Entergy sucks, they don't suck as much as the old-arse power system that SWB uses. It's at least a step in the forward direction.

I think this is a pretty positive development for the city. Destroya gets a lot of hate on this site (often earned) but she has pushed two fairly major items over the finish line - 1. she got a deal with the state to reallocate tourism dollars away from the convention center/tourism to infrastructure, and 2. This deal which adds a layer of power redundancy to the drainage system.

I’ll give her credit where I think credit is due. Unlike Mitch, I think she will leave the city with a better drainage system than she inherited. And hiring Korban instead of some local politician to run the SWB was likewise a big decision she got right.

No I understand how the towers work, I meant how did they fail? Did they not maintain pressure for their designated time? Did they Mkt maintain pressure at all?

Under the deal announced by Mayor LaToya Cantrell, those power supplies would be relegated to backup status, with the main source of electricity for the pumping stations that dot the city switching to power purchased from Entergy.

100% chance the backup is gonna need a backup

installing frequency changers that would convert Entergy's power to the archaic standard used by about half of the S&WB's equipment.

New Orleans' 119-year-old drainage system relies on two types of power: An unusual 25-cycle system that predates World War II and a more modern, 60-cycle source mostly supplied by Entergy.
