2.5 million a year.

LINK

quote:

There are 108 employees in the department's traffic enforcement division. The city budget projects those staffers will generate more than $14 million in revenue from parking tickets this year. The department's budgeted expenses this year for its ticket-writing section is just under $11.5 million.

I understand a small part of their job is dealing with people who are parked unsafe. And you have to have some enforcement, or else, no one will ever follow the law.

But this proves what a joke the system is. There is absolutely no need for the aggressive, entrapping they do when it comes to ticketing cars.

If all they are netting is 2.5 mil... that is a joke.

Get rid of all of them except for maybe a dozen. Raise the fines for the really bad parking violations (blocking fire hydrants, etc). Find 2.5 mil somewhere else, or just cut other spending by 2.5 mil.

They would make more for the city if they didn’t camp out in downtown coffee shops and hotel lobbies as soon as it drizzles or they hear thunder.

But that's 108 otherwise unemployed individuals. The department is a source of jobs in the community and isn't contributing to the deficit. I don't see what the issue is.

The ones that patrol uptown ride in a van 3 and maybe 4 deep. That’s another issue as well.

One sitting in drivers seat playing on their phone, 2 in passenger seats playing on their phone while one is issuing tickets

So government exists to provide jobs?

Please let this be a poorly executed troll job.

There are laws and law enforcement. Isn't it a good thing that these individuals aren't costing tax payers more money? It's a self-sustaining department.

You need to link the rest of that article. Where they point out we have 100+ people doing traffic enforcement and only 35 doing drainage maintenance. 35 frickING PEOPLE TO KEEP THE COTY FROM FLOODING. Think about that shite. The kicker is that no one is saying let’s cut ticket writers and use the money to add sewerage people. Instead they are saying they need “a lot more money” for hiring. fricking assholes don’t know what it means to operate within a budget.

If you want to see why this is just a money maker for the city, stand at the corner of Dumaine and Carrollton around the time Endymion starts every year. You’ll see a half dozen vans full of meter maids, followed by a dozen tow trucks, flooding into that neighborhood.

The NOPD plays hands-off regarding parking enforcement leading up to the parade. Almost anything goes. When the parade starts and nobody is watching vehicles, the city gets their take.

11.5 MM in expenses seems excessive for 108 employees, that's 106,481/employee.

It'd be cheaper to just not have the meters...

Clearly, you have never had any interaction with them.

How are they aggressive/entrapping? I've never had that experience.
