ut for them to surge 4,5,6x, freakin TEN times the price is absolutely absurd and is indeed price gouging…it's like those frickers who sell wood for 10x the price when a hurricane on forecasted to hit.

you know why they do it, right?

Most of that extra money goes to drivers, to try and get more of them on the road to meet the demand.

It's literally supply and demand in action.

Let's do a thought experiment for the stupid cabbie:

Fare1:

10 dollars, 50% to driver, 50% to Uber.

Total:
Uber: 5 dollars
Driver 5 dollars

fare 2 - same ride, SURGE pricing:

50 dollars, SAME SPLIT!

Now tell me cabbie, does the driver make more money for that same ride? or does the evil middle man take all the money?

My phone has a calculator on it arse. I just wasn't familiar with how uber broke out the split. Are you sure that's how it works ? Do you have proof ?

With regard to the gas issue, there is a reason once a State of Emergency gets declared prices can't be jacked up through the roof.

Isn't it against the law to jack up prices during a hurricane?

Yes. Don't you believe in a free market? that's how we are able to control our resources. artificial govt price controls lead to the hasty depletion of a limited supply of gasoline

I'm aware of the mechanism that halts prices from rising. I just fundamentally disagree with it. It encourages irrational hoarding of a precious commodity, making it more difficult for those who need it the most to obtain it.

Anywho, let's talk about Uber.

When can we expect these guys to get started? I may start going out more again.

UberX drivers receive up to 80 percent of each fare.

So if Surge is three times the price, You make three times the money.

I figured you cabbies would love surge pricing, you'll get all the business!

It's fine for normal use but it's not a serious alternative to the cab company yet.

What uses are "non-normal"?

Like I said I'm ok with surging to a certain extent to help with supply & demand. But bullshite to multiple your price 4,5,6,10x the normal fare. That's gouging plain an simple.

Their service doesn't change at all. I was talking to a 49er fan in the quarter 2 years ago and the mutha fuggin LaQuinta was charging 1,500 a night. Gouging!

How would you feel if a restaurant charged you 4x the price of an entree during peak hours?

Almost forgot we get gouged by the cabbies every weekend they dont turn on their meter for "special events."

sometimes a cab to the quarter from the Dome is $7 and sometime's it's $25.

Crazy.

Of course I do...but I don't believe in price gouging during a state of emergency...which is I believe illegal?

No shite. It is going to be awesome.

I was by Harrah's the other day waiting for a friend to get his car out the garage.
A cabbie asked if I needed a ride, and I said to Kenner. He waved his arms down at me and turned and walked away.

I would of took the cab rather than piled up in my friend's car.

Supply & Demand.

If demand exceeds supply then prices rise. If supply exceeds demand, then prices fall.

By using the surge, more drivers are enticed to go onto the road, thereby increasing the supply and helping to alleviate demand.
