There is also a good place there for coffee and beignets near a playground.

I think Morning Call closed, right? We took my son to the story book land when he was two. It was fun then...might be too toddler-ish for him now. I did forget about the games they have though. That might be fun.

If the weather is nice can't beat the zoo.

Personally, I think the Aquarium isn’t worth it. We have the pass and it’s nice to kill time on a hot day downtown to sneek off into with the kids. Can see everything in less than an hour. Not worth the $28 or whatever it costs. If it’s a Wednesday, welfare participants get in 1 for free. I would check and see which one it is for that day and avoid said place.

If the weather is shitty, obviously the aquarium or insectarium.

I vote aquarium though.

Look into going to City Park as well.

As an older metro area kid who has become a fuddy duddy Metairie-ite and generally avoids the city, I still love and frequent City Park. One of the best things about Nola, hands down. The place is huge. You can find remote nooks and crannies and just let the kids run. Just tell them to avoid the water's edge. Too many alligators around lately.
But yes- multiple playgrounds, mini golf, beignets, StoryLand, botanical gardens, statue garden, Ducks and other birds to look at (and feed if you're into that sort of thing). Great for kids and adults at a fraction of the cost of going to any Audubon attraction.
The Zoo, Insectarium, and Aquarium are great, though. Just a little pricey.

It did, but Cafe du Monde is renovating the space, in the meantime, they have a food truck parked outside.

can't speak for the zoo, because I haven't been, but between the other two I would say insectarium over aquarium.

Maybe it was because it was a new experience, but the insectarium was cool I thought. The aquarium was nice, but after going to the ones in Atlanta and Chattanooga it was just ok, nothing special. The one nice thing was the parakeet area.

The insectarium was really cool, getting to see so many different bugs, and then the butterfly section with all of them flying around.
